Sorry to ask a fairly dumb question but if I use a teleconverter on a Nikon DSLR without in built auto foucs will the lens its attached to still auto foucs as it does now or will adding the teleconverter cause problems ?

If the teleconverter has full electrical connectivity and supports AF-S and the lens is suitable for using on a teleconverter (some Nikkor lenses cannot be used on Nikon converters - the rear elements of the lens hit the optics in the converters) and the resulting maximum aperture is big enough to let the AF work, it will probably AF. BUT, check the system before splashing out just in case!

The motor may be in the lens, but it's the camera doing the focus thinking, and it still needs to receive input it can work with.
