Hi,

I have just procured a Sigma 300mm fixed lens.

I have a TC2 mark 3 which does not fit without converting the ring tab.

So my questions are

Question 1
Is the Nikon TC drastically better than the Sigma TC

Question 2
Should I convert the Nikon TC (remove the ring tab)
Risking damaging the glass

Question 3
What's the Sigma like at 600mm f5.6
If it is good buy a TC for the new sigma lens

Thanks

Jason

The Nikon 2x tc is very good for its type. For that lens i would get the Sigma 1.4tc and not the Sigma 2x tc as you will loose allot of quality and more than likely the AF will be poor if it does AF at all.

If you have no need for the Nikon tc then sell it as they command good prices and buy the Sigma 1.4tc.I have the Sigma tc and its very good on the 120-300 lens and also really good on my Nikon big lens.

As a friend in the photographic retail trade put it, use Sigma telecons behind Sigma lenses (ideally primes) and Nikkor telecons behind Nikkor lenses (again, ideally primes). Each company designs their telecons to suit their lenses. In an ideal world, visit a retailer who stocks both and try them for yourself.

I doubt your D800 would have any AF issues with a lens/telecon combination that is f/5.6 wide open - plenty of Nikon's kit lenses are as slow as that (lens only) and even my old D70 (and Dad's D50) managed quick and accurate AF with the slower lenses.

Thanks guys.

I had the Nikon TC for my 200mm

I aim to get the 400mm f2.8 (in the future, maybe years away).

I may now get the Sigma after I have played a bit

I've got the sigma 2x EX DG TC and its great. Barely touches the image quality and the AF also works a treat with my 70-200 F2.8. It'll be immense on the 300 F2.8!
