Evening,

I'm looking for a little extra length and no funny business here either lol. I've got a canon 760d with a tamron 18-270 lens and was wondering could I get teleconverter for some extra added length?

I know a new lens would be the best but not 100% certain I want to buy a new lens just yet as this one is very accessible for me on my travels.

Cheers

The lens is f 6.3 at the long end, add a 1.4 TC you will loose 1 stop add a 2*TC you will loose 2 stops. If my maths are correct that's f 9ish and f 11ish ( I think , its certainly of that order).
It is highly unlikely your camera will autofocus and the IQ will not be very good, that's assuming you can find a TC that will work

Teleconverters don't fit all lenses, it's very likely they won't fit your lens. To be honest I wouldn't use one on a lens like that as AF and IQ will both take a hit. It's worth remembering teleconverters were first designed for fast lenses (f2.8, f4 at a push). Whilst technology has moved on slightly and f5.6 lenses can use teleconverters with certain cameras there is still the downside of degrading IQ and slowing AF. Limiting yourself to f8 with a 1.4tc on a f5.6 lens means lower shutter speed or higher ISO. Safdly whilst teleconverters sound like a perfect solution there are potentially some big draw backs.

Yeah no worries guys, I did have a funny feeling you would looked AF and didn't realise you would downgrade the lens at the top end which is pretty pointless and a shame lol.

I see what you mean looks like I'll have to save a little and go for a siggy as I've been looking at the 150-600 contemporary anyways but didn't want to splash out that just yet haha. Looks like there is an excuse now.

Thanks for clearing this up anyways guys. So on the siggy lens I've noticed they do packages with a teleconverter so I'm guessing that still works the same way you loose top end again.

Cheers

Before you buy a tc of any sort find out what is the largest aperture your camera will af at.
Most are f5.6 some of the newer Canon,s will go to f8 so if you have a lens which is f5.6 at the long end adding a tc will make it f8

Okey dokey that's great thank you. I think I'll just stick to going for the lens for now and not worry about complicating things with a tc [emoji1360]

The only Canon Camera bodies that would AF with the Sigma and a 1.4 converter are 1 series, 7 D MkII, 5D3, 5D4. The 80D will also focus at f8 with certain Canon lenses.
