Hi Guys,

I have just purchased a Cannon 400D with a Cannon 18-55 lens. I would like an additional 200 or 300mm telephoto lens,
I have looked at the Cannon EF90-300mm non USM and the Cannon EF75-300 USM.......What is the advantage of the USM over the non-USM lens and can anyone recommend looking at other lens's ?

Thanks

Paul

Canon with a single n ;)

I wouldnt recommend either of those lenses but in answer to your question, USM is meant focus to faster than non-USM.

I would probably recommend the Sigma 70-300mm APO DG if your looking for that sort of a range. That's where my money would, and did, go - especially if that fits your price bracket. If you wanted something a little more expensive you could look at the Canon 70-300mm IS, but that's double the price of the Siggy.

The Canon mentioned above is pretty damned good though... can't go wrong for ~300 quid

I wouldn't go for the 75-300, it's a pretty poorly made lens. This is reflected in the price tag, it costs under £100 I believe.

USM stands for Ultrasonic Motor (don't need to explain what that means, dfrear has already done it :D )

Also look at the 70-200 range, the f/4 non-IS is great value for money. And the 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS, another good telephoto for a lower budget.

What is your budget by the way?

the USM lens is also quieter than the non USM lens, but as mentioned, go for the sigma 70-300 APO version instead :)
