What would be a good starter camera for him. He uses ours which is pretty knackard eats batteries and is slow taking pictures. The shots he enjoys doing are close-ups on flower/insects and such and shots of people posing lol.
Don't want to spend a lot in case he gets bored quickly but something reasonable. Cheers

What's your top budget?
Are looking to a compact \ bridge \ DSLR?

I'd say Ricoh GRD3 (£299) could be worth looking at. I think it's one of the fastest compacts around with the "snap focus" mode and it's a classic people shooter.

I'm on the app. What camera do you have?
I have a dslr, bought my son a lessor model so he could use my lenses plus it was something I understood.

There is the added advantage that if you upgrade any lenses or kit then it can be passed down. Cost effective then, at least that's what I tell the boss.

A teenage 13, or a teenage 19?

For the former, I'd suggest a good quality compact that would allow at least basic manual control of the exposure if that was the way he wanted to go.

For the latter, a good compact, one of the CSC cameras (micro-4/4rds) with kit lens, or a secondhand film camera. Depends on their interest.

It would be probably be better to set a budget and then let your son tell us what they want to do.

I use a D300 & have a few lenses & flash guns. My 16 year old son has just started an ALevel in photography & we've taken the plunge & bought him the D3100 this morning with a 18-55 kit lens.
I took this option to do the same as Byker above, just dreading him leaving it lying around at college now :suspect:

Teenager doing GCSE's thanks for the advice guys, will have a look around and see what he thinks of the suggestions. Cheers

My daughter started with an interest a few years ago and was using my 300D - initially in auto or basic zones and as time progressed she has started to play around a little more with the advanced settings. She is half way through her GCSE's and did very well in her first year, so have taken the plunge and picked her up a new DSLR (still Canon) which she is loving. Think it also makes a difference it's now her camera, rather than her old mans old one.

pentax KR twin lens kit for about £450, i think thats an awesome pack starting out with a DSLR
