Been thinking today, what is the crack with these bad boy's?

Iv'e never had one or used one. Are they worth it?

Comments, welcome. Just a bit of background :)

Yes - so long as you put them on a decent lens I'd say so. I have both the 1.4x & the 2x TC for use with my 70-200mm. have used both very regularly and been seriously impressed. Makes the whole shebang mighty heavy though! A bit over an hour of Rugby with the 2x on and my shoulders are screaming at me!

Not all lenses will accept them though....I think most lens manufacturers have a list on their websites of what can and can't be used with one. Also worth remembering (assuming you're canon which I believe you are?) is the fact that anything other than 1 series bodies will lose AF with a TC over f5.6. having said that, while we were away I stacked both TC's and not only did I keep the AF, the camera cheerfully insisted that it was wide open at f5.6 - not sure how I achieved that! :D

Shall let you know when mine arrives tomorrow hopefully.

Whats the x2 like compared to the x1.4 Witch? Been seriously thinking about one........ and a cheap 600mm then on the 300 too ;)

I was distinctly cautious having heard so many people saying that the IQ from the 2x isn't great, but I've been happy enough with mine I must admit.

The shot below was at full stretch with the 2x - 400mm. 1/1000th, f8, ISO200, handheld.

And this is a 100% crop of the central gull.

Ooo what one you gone for mate?

A i well and truely busted the piggy bank, to say its a Canon, decided i was better off buying a lens that shouldnt need upgrading anythime soon and give me the professional quililty that i require.

No beer money now tho, :(

Hi.

I was asking similar questions not so long ago.

In the end I went for the Kenko Pro 300 DG 2x from Onestop Digital.

It's a lovely piece of kit and works well with my Nikon D50 and Tamron 70-300mm lens.

Posted some pics in another post somewhere - will try and link to it ....

Nope - can't find them, sorry!!!

Anth.

Well Will i have had a quick test shot today, mounted the 30d on a tripod whilst setting up a odject to picture. I used full manuel mode shoot at 100mm and 200mm on the New Canon 70-200mm F2.8 IS then fitted the 1.4 tc then reshot at the same lengths, (well almost to within 5mm) i really couldnt tell any difference. I used f5.6 all the time, as i wanted to compare the new lens with the old Sigma 50-500mm, the canon is much better at f5.6 upto around 250mm, after that the 2 are very closely matched inho. Must try and borrow a 2 tc but from todays efforts id doubt the 2 would be a bennitfit over the Sigma, which seems at it best between 280-450mm.

So conclusion id be happy enough to leave the Sigma at home with the 1.4x tc bolted to my Canon on the Indy curcuit at Brands, but the Sigma would still win for me at many parts of the gp trakc, and Thruxton. But i am sure if you havent already got that length like me then the 2 TC would be a good cheaper option for very compareable results.

Very interesting indeed that mate, ummm, thanks so much for the input. I was just thinking of one for the 400d and its lenses, as I got the length with the new 600mm. I will be posting some results from that baby very soon. I just keep looking at it, (and the lens)

But again, TC im unsure, deff going to leave off for a little bit, its been a month of spend spend. Just been lent a Speedlight 580 and well im tempted, lol. This is a bloody expensive hobby.

Yeah very aint it, i just sold my second car to fund my new gear, only tiime will tell if that was a wise move or not.

hmmm flash, i have been holding off, dont need one yet for motorsport at the track, but would be handy for pit lane stuff. Argggggggh lol
