Hi

Just got a shiny almost new nikon 300 f4 from FiestaRed and now need to get a 1.4 and 1.7 TC. The 1.7 TC is no problem because it has to be Nikon, the 1.4 on the other hand could be 1 of 3, Nikon, kenko or sigma.

Can any of you knowledgeable chaps let me know if there is any significant difference between the 1.4 TCs from these companies compared to the Nikon.

Do all report the correct information like focal length, aperture etc to the body?
And most importantly are there any IQ differences?

The price differential is £100 so dont want to spend more than i need if the IQ and other info is the same as the nikon.

If there is a thread that already covers this please point me to it.

AF or AF-S?

Also covered a few times so worth a search!

Sorry should have added AF-S to the title.

I have looked through several search results and there are several references to the kenko IQ being as good as the nikon but no details that I can find regarding correct reporting of focal length etc. I have not found any info on direct comparisons between all three and little betewwn the nikon and sigma.

The sales guy in Jacobs suggested the sigma 1.4 ex would be better quality that a kenko 1.4 300 pro any thoughts on that would be welcome.

The Jacobs guy is talking poop.

The Sigma will mount and fit OK but AF will jitter horribly. Ignore him.

The Kenko reports EXIF fine, 420mm f/5.6 with the 1.4x.

I've got several TCs and there is no difference between a Nikkor and Kenko 1.4x I can spot. Go for a Kenko 1.4x Pro DG. Avoid anything with MC4 or MC7 in the title if buying Kenko.

Thanks for the warning re the sigma

Do I have to worry about sample variation with the kenko or Nikon. I had assumed the Nikon 1.7 TC would be to a high QC standard but I have read in a thread ( only 1 admittedly on another site ) that a guy had to try 3 samples before he got a good one, I’ve only associated this problem with sigma in the past?

Same goes for the kenko, should I be worried about sample variation? If the answer is yes then I’ll buy locally and pay the premium, if not I’ll buy on the net and save some cash.

No

I have to say I didn't care for the 300mm and 1.7X combo, just felt it lost a lot of sharpness

Puddleduck, it's a kenko 1.4 PRO DGX then?

Dod, Many others say they get good IQ with the combo. I'm not expecting 500 f4 quality as I’m not paying 500 f4 prices, a small drop in IQ will be acceptable. I would be happy if the 1.7TC gives the same quality as my 70-300vr at 300 which is a little soft, anything better than this is a bonus.

I get very good image quality with the 300 f4 AFS and 1.7TC, in fact a job to tell between the 1.7 and 1.4 .... good light helps though as you will be at f6.7 with that combo.

Here you go 300 + 1.7 TC ISO3200

That'll be fine. DGX was supposed to solve a problem with EXIF but as the original DG doesn't have that problem (in Nikon fit) the DGX version seeems like an excuse for a prime bump.

Pro 300, Pro 300 DG and Pro 300 DGX are all the same thing optically and EXIF-ally.

I use the Nikon 1.4x and 2x

The 2x is a bit soft and slow to auto focus in low light

Click the image below to show the 300mm AFS with 2x (it is also cropped a bit to make matters worse).

I think its is probably about the same IQ as the sigma 500mm zooms.

Thanks for the advice and comments re IQ of the TCs kenko AF-1.4x pro 300 DG and AF-S 1.7EII on way from Digital rev.

I know these are grey imports but as no moving parts should be ok.
