Several weeks ago I was listening to Five Live when a youngster was asked who her favourite band was..Foo Fighters. I'd heard the name before and though it unusual. Anyway, the presenter played a song by them and I was quite taken by it. In the thread of Who's the Greatest drummer I see he's mentioned . Since his untimely death (50 years old) I've watched clips of him on TV playing in the band . Amazing drummer. Then my thoughts turned to the number of ' rock legends' that have died as a result of overdosing on drugs because a prelimanry finding (in Columbia) is that he had 10 substances in his body. I started thinking of some I was aware of ...Brian Jones Rolling Stones (a month after the Stones ejected him found dead in his swimming pool) Jimmy Hendrix..LSD...died on his own vomit...Prince.. Amy Whitehouse..drugs and alcohol. She even had a hit with 'Rehab'.. Elvis P of course.. overdose lead to a heart attack.. Whitney Houston.. Cocaine and alcohol..drowned in her bath..Sid Vicious..heroine..Kurt Cobain Nirvana..suicide by shotgun but abused drugs and alcohol. It so happens that Dave Grohl was playing with Nirvana when Cobain took his life and now he's with Foo Fighters when Taylor Hawkins overdoses..

I wondered just how many had died as a result of substance and alcohol abuse and came across this grim list. It could almost be described as an occupational hazard. Such a waste of extraordinary talent.

Paul Kossoff was another fine guitarist who succumbed to drugs.
Booze did for Bon Scott, another musician who departed at an early age.
