So while walking through Wakefield Town centre I noticed a Starbucks Coffee shop has sprouted up, great I though the Tax dodging fookers have popped up next to Café NERO to put them out of business how sporting.

But a quick google suggests Café NERO are actually even worse tax dodging fookers.

In fact it turns out one of the only big chains on the high street toing the line is COSTA which is ownded by the Whitbread group and pays quite a bit of tax.

So if you want to do a bit for the UK economy walk past STARBUCKS and NERO and head to COSTA.

I'm not a big fan of paying through the nose for a coffee, but on the odd occasion I'm out shopping with the missus and need to keep her sweet we always go to Costa.
I actually prefer their coffee above the other two you mentioned anyways, but it's an added bonus knowing that they seem to be a much more decent company.

They also fairly recently built a new roasting plant here in the UK, which I would be very surprised if it wouldn't have been cheaper outside the UK.

Costa all the way! [emoji93] bucks too bitter

Thanks. I knew about Starbucks but not Nero. Fortunately I prefer the taste of Costa so I don't have any kind of ethical dilemma.

Shame I can't stand costa coffe, but not keen on nero or starbucks either, there are some very good indeoendant coffee
places near me

I just send her ladyship into the kitchen and let her do the coffee making ,f*** knows whats in it ,but I'm still alive :canon::runaway::runaway::runaway:

The Angel Coffee House in Lincoln is far better than Starbucks, Nero's or Costas. And if I'm not in Lincoln, it doesn't take much to find an independent place that is as good.

I know it's not what this thread is about, but here's really interesting explanation of why you get coffee shops right next to each other.....

Oh and as for which coffee tastes better to me.....I find them all very bland and flavourless. Local indie shops aren't *just* better for the area, the country and your general well being. They almost always have far better coffee than a chain. I go to whichever has the biggest slice of vegan cake ;)

We go to the independent with the shortest queue. The 2 we choose between in this way have coffee that's as good as each other's and are within 25 yards of each other so Mrs Nod or I join the queue at the first one while the other peers up at the other. If the one who has gone ahead isn't back within a minute or so, the original queuer joins them at the 2nd place. Of the big chains, Costa is the best of a relatively bad bunch.

Starbuck's latte extra shot for me, especially when they have an interesting new bean on the menu.
Couldn't give a chuff about the tax thing.

I prefer McDonalds coffee. Best on high standard imo.
TBH its not bad, but I do find in varies from strength and even temperature, and at the same store..

So when the country goes bankrupt, we'll know who to blame :p

(TBH I couldn't tell you off the top of my head who does and doesn't pay I have other things to remember :D So it doesn't enter the equation for me either )

The only time I go into MuckDonalds is for a McDump and a coffee is the least offensive option as a conscience salver!

I go to one that is convenient and like the taste of, making a political protest/statement through all the while £3.00 for a cup of coffee is not really the place.

thing is, by the time you boycott everyone diddling tax you'd never buy anything from anywhere.

I keep forgetting whether I'm boycotting Starbucks because they don't pay tax or because I object to them asking my name. I think it's probably the whole 3 quid for dishwater plus 376 ways to buy sugar to take the taste away thing though ;)

If drinking black tea I go milk second and adjust by colour, mostly I'm drinking green oolong at the moment

I was told that milk first so that the boiling water doesn't burn the coffee grounds.
I've not noticed a difference either way tbh.

But milk second, is easier to judge the colour ( I like it just "off black" ) :D
It is not good practise to make tea with coffee grounds.

I’m not sure I’d class what these places sell as ‘coffee’.

In fact no I wouldn’t :D

Each to their own.
There really is no such thing as a coffee to suit everyone.

From coffee cups to carbon, we'll find opportunities to make a positive impact for the environment across our whole supply chain. We'll make sure that our suppliers and the people who work with us are always trated fairly and with respect.

Our Commitments

  • We will source responsibly and with integrity
  • We will minimise our environment impact
  • We will always do business the right way

Personally I get my coffee from the lovely local shop - they seem to the be busiest shop in town when I was there on Saturday. Good for them!!

I’m just a hipster snob!

I like my small batch single origin brews from independents rather than the utter crap these chains sell.

Good for you. Enjoy.
Starbucks entertain some rather nice niche origin beans, but people seem to ignore them.

I'm not complaining...shorter queue for me.

That’s just their marketing. I can go into my local shop who roast their own (rave/Cirencester) who will have literally fought to buy certain beans at auction, undertaken a few trial roasts to get the best from them. Once perfected I can then buy beans roasted that morning.

The chains can’t even begin to compete with that (given they have to mass buy and supply nationally) and even if they did their staff simply don’t have the competence to brew the coffee correctly.

So, as I said....enjoy your coffee.
I'll enjoy mine
