Anyone use one of these? The wife is wanting a fast zoom and was wondering.

Seems to get overall good reviews, but there are those few that scare me. lol. Don't have the money right now to get a Nikon equivelant. :(

I picked one up a couple of weeks ago as a travel lens. The idea being I could take my 17-35 and 50mm prime out of my bag and have one fast zoom to cover both.
I tested it out in Brussels last week and have to say I'm very impressed. The bokeh isn't quite as pleasing as the classic 50 but it is still good, it's sharp and easy to get on with.
Like everyone who has one of these lenses I just wish it had that extra 20mm of zoom but I have no regrets.

if you're after the nikon fit version, there's one in the "for sale" forum. its a nice lens, i'd recommend it.

Very good lens.

but there are those few that scare me.

Ignore any reviews that are too out there, usually written by nutters who tend to confuse user error with equipment error.

Photozone.de and Thom Hogan both suggest its as good as the Nikkor 17-55. I agree.

It's a great wee lens, iq is excellent, it's not as solid as the Nikon, but it's a fraction of the price. You'll always find at least one bad review for anything, best to take them with a pinch of salt ;)

I've just bought one, very pleased so far :D

I bought one to get a low light walk about lens. yes it's a bit short as I'm used to the 17-85 IS from Canon
but I wanted something with f2.8
overall it's good I think, bit it can be a bit soft in places. However, I think that's my own fault not being used to not having IS once again
on a budget it's not bad at all. the nearest canon item is about £650+ for L glass and would be twice as heavy to use as well.
I don't regret my purchase at all.
I like doing gigs hence the f2.8
so I get shots like this

I always like to comment on this lens because I was so impressed by it when I bought it, and as time passes I just enjoy it more and more. It does have some distortion at the wide end, but its very nice and sharp (esp. wide open, but tack sharp at f4) and has some of the nicest bokeh I've seen on a zoom aside from maybe the canon 24-70 L. Very portable too. You'll love it, and more so as time passes.

One of my favourites, one of the best optical bargains for Nikon shooters alongside the 55-200 VR IMHO.
