Hi,

Straightforward question I hope, but i'm new so be patient!

Would a novice like me notice the difference between the Tamron 55-200mm F4/5.6 DI II Macro EOS and the Canon EF 55-200 F4.5/5.6 USM/2?

The tamron is obviously loads cheaper, but based on advice from another of my questions i don't want to buy something only to find that there was a reason for the cheapness :)

Forget them both and get the Nifty Two Fifty, for the money it wont be beaten.......sharp as you like.

Victor

Thanks Victor. Forgive my ignorance though...what's the nifty two fifty?

The nifty fifty is a Canon 50mm 1.8 lens, it can be picked up for around £60, is cheap and plasticky, but takes really good shots, really nice for portrait.

This lens would provide you with limited versatility as it is a prime. So it really depends on what you want to use the lens for. The ones you mentioned would have good focal range, but certainly wouldn't be the sharpest. A better option to look at if you want range is the Canon 55-250, which has the benefit of IS (Image Stabilisation).

for great reviews on lenses.

Indeed, but the nifty two fifty is the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS. New for about £200, i've seen them on here for about £160, and they're held in really high regard!

Didn't know that, so it already is getting legend status. At least the OP has a consensus.

Thanks for all the info, but maybe I didn't explain my question properly.

I know the Tamron won't be as good as the Canon equivalents, but for 70 quid will it be a bad purchase as a first telephoto just to give me the extra range over my kit lens?

I've used that Tamron lens, and found it to be a good lens. Not used the Canon equivalent though so can't say which one of them will be a better lens for you.
