Hi , I'm thinking of getting the Tamron 90mm macro lens for my 550D.Anyone out there have any good or bad things to say about it.It gets good reviews but it's always best to hear from someone who owns one. Thanks.
 
I had my dirty paws on one, a couple of years back and liked it...reason I don't own one now...I don't own a Macro lens!

Must admit after owning one of these and a 28-75mm f2.8 I am a Tamron fan!

I have the Tamron 90 which I have used on my Nikon D80 and had great fun with it. Mine is the older version which wont communicate to the camera so I can only use it in MF mode. It has a shallow depth of field so you have to be spot on with the focus, but it is razor sharp when u get it right.

Good= sharp, cheap, light

Bad= not very well made, noisy slow AF, stupid clutch that sticks, extends considerably

Overall for the money it's good, and the IQ is great which is the important thing. Just don't expect a pro feel/build quality.
 
At one time they were so good they were used for optical testing, I have an older one and it's superb. Haven't tried the latest version, but I'm hearing good things from friends.
 
I never had the clutch stick on mine and it was a damn good lens, I sold it when I downsized to a compact but I would love to have one again as not only is it good for macro, but its great for portraits as well, in fact mine was hardly off my pentax DSLR
 
I love mine. As others have said, it is a bit plasticky and does extend considerably, but optically it is superb. AF is slow and noisy, but I don' use AF for macro anyway. I would say that it is the sharpest lens I own.

Exactly my thoughts, I've never had a problem with the clutch though, and why one day I'll swap to the 100mm Canon.

Optically it's superb, but it's a manual focus lens with some AF ability in real life. Whereas the Canon makes a useful portrait lens too.
 
Fabulous lens, I use mine for studio portraiture and it sharper than my 85mm f1.4 Nikkor, also comes in handy for the close up stuff of wheel bearings I do for work..
 
I've got one for my sony its great not sure whether its as good as a sony or canon nikon etc as i couldn't afford one but for the price its fantastic
