Hi everyone,

I am reasonably new to this forum and follow it with great interest. I have been using a Tamron 90mm f2.8 Di Macro lens for about a year and am very impressed with the quality. However, I think image stabilisation will improve my outdoor hand held shots. I am considering the newer Tamron 90mm f2.8 Macro VC USD or the Sigma 105mm f2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro as a replacement.

Has anyone had any experience with either of these lenses and is the IQ as good as the non VC model. Which is the better of the two lenses?

I look forward to any comments. Thanks.

I've just bought the new Sigma 105mm OS HSM and its stunning, a truly beautiful lens. My recent posts in the macro section were all taken with this lens. The OS certainly helps with the lower shutter speeds.

Apparently the older one is sharper.
Really? Not seen anything that says that, quite the opposite. In fact If it's sharper than the current one it'll cut your eyes out!

Only thing I recall reading was fstoppers review and they seemed to be underwhelmed by it. I have the 90mm non vc and in terms of sharpness its incredible when used properly. Cant imagine the new one being much better in that regard. Maybe in other areas of IQ i.e CA etc its probably better.

Yes I would be surprised if you could see any difference in sharpness with real subjects using any of the current macro lenses
I have the sigma old versions of the 105 and 150 and the Canon 100L with IS and they are all good
The IS (OS) is really helpful for handheld shots especially without flash makes a real difference

Everything reads the opposite, just had a quick google. Couldn't find the fstopppers article?

It's pretty academic anyway as any differences in IQ will be negligible.

Lol its on their site. To be fair it doesnt make any odds either way. You will struggle to find any even remotely recent prime lens that doesnt deliver superb IQ. Cost wise for £220 new the one I own will do me. Im sure there is fantastic VC and AF speed etc but the reality for me was that 9/10 times I using manual focus, tripod or monopod and some external light source so I didnt see the value in spending over twice as much.

Sorry odd jim, wires crossed there somehow haha. The sigma is meant to be superb too. Have seen some terrific results from the 150mm OS

Lol you mean the 105 OS??

Jim- is this one of their new 'Art' lenses? I'm still hesitant on any Sigma after past escapades but these new ones seem to be good- not that I need anything lol but more out of interest

It's not labelled or marketed as part of their ART lenses, as it's part of their EX line.

I think most of the centering issues were on their zooms, specifically the 10-20. I've never had a problem with Sigma QC with both the 70-200 and the new 105 macro. The Macro is just superb in all respects, the new finish and build is lovely, and the results are stunning!

Their 35mm art is terrific. Although there are dodgy copies on both sides of the fence (canon and nikon) and I have experienced both lol. I am very interested in their 50mm 1.4 Art.

Ta- agreed on the 10-20, very variable- my mate is on his 3rd copy and I do feel sorry for him- well a bit- I did say don't buy one:D

Thanks for everybody's comments on my Macro query, very helpful. After looking at the Macro shots by odd jim, which are superb, I am leaning towards the Sigma 105mm lens.

Now to try and get a good price for my non VC Tamron 90mm.
