Hi all,
I have been looking at this lens. Does anyone have one and what is their opinion on it?
Also does anyone no if it will autofocus with my Nikon D40?

All help appreciated.
Helen

It has the AF motor, so yes, it will AF on your D40.
The lens is great for macro shots, however, the lack of VR is quite critical for this range (70-300), you will need a tripod for it :)

D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100 & D5000 are all non-motor bodies which require in-lens focus motors.

Hope I didn't miss any :D

You pretty much get what you pay for. I sold mine and bought a 70-300 VR2 nikkor. The difference is night and day but then so is the price.

It's a good starter lens but no more than that. IMHO

I am actually an absolute novice in photography! I went around for weeks asking for the best entry level dslr for my new hobby. The majority recommended D3000 (this was about a year ago). I got the 18 - 55 VR kit, but after a year of doing everything I can with it, I need lens that will allow me to shoot distant objects.

I'm not sure I can make my photos look much better if I spent 3 times more on a lens

So, just to make sure (sorry, I'm not at all familiar with the technical side of cameras), even though the D3000 and all those listed are non-motor bodies, since this lens can autofocus on the D40, it will autofocus on my D3000?

A good lens won't make your composition better but it will make them sharper.;)

As the lens has the motor yes it will auto focus with your D3000.

I have the Tamron and its a good lens you just need to use it in good light and make sure the shutter speed is equivalent or more than the focal length you are using to avoid shake (or use tripod)

ah you also posted on my thread about this, does it really need a tripod?? I really need something that can be hand held.

I also have this lens. You'll only need a tripod in poor light where your shutter speed is well down. I can't think of that many occasions when I've used a tripod with this lens to be quite honest. It's a decent enough lens and a terrific value route into tele photo. I'm going to be selling mine on soon but only to buy the Nikon vr 70-300.

Now that's the lens I really want - how much are they at the mo?? And out of interest really, how much are you planning to sell your lens for?

This is the one that's £99 in jessops at mo - just to check I'm not getting my lens confused.

I'm not sure what the rules are regarding discussing my lens outside of for sale section. I'll send a PM if that's ok.

The Nikon 70-300 VR is about £380 new or £280 used.

its a good lens. I have one for my D90 and had trouble with shake because its a little slow when its not bright and sunny. The only way i got round this was to go into manual mode and adust the shutter speed to the point you its takes a quick snap ,i know it will be under exxposed but if you use raw files then use software to adjust the exposure and bring it back up. also use a decent iso not too high or too low. Thats my set up and photos came out 100% sharp
