Can anyone tell me what they think of these lens. I take pictures of local football matches with my ageing 300D & 75 - 300 5.6 lens. I'm now looking to go a little better but with a limited amount of money. I've been looking at the ebay option with Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG Macro HSM II, SIGMA 70-200 F2.8 EX DGOS HSM, CANON LENS EF 70-200MM 2.8, or I have just looked on the MPB site and seen this Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 IF Macro. In a few months time I'm also looking at upgrading the body for maybe a 550D.
Is there much difference in the picture quality from the Canon to the other brand of lens. Any help would be great before I make the wrong decision. :bonk:

imho having owned this and sold it, the AF would be quite slow for action stuff.

The Sigma is apparently faster than the Tamron for AF but I haven't used one personally.

I have the tamron 70-200 2.8 and i love it! I shoot mainly stationary subjects so the sluggish focus is no problem. The focus will kill it for sports use i think.

In Depth review here: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Tamron-70-200mm-f-2.8-Di-Macro-Lens-Review.aspx

Incompatability with some canon cameras (i only use central focus point and recompose anyway so never noticed any problems): http://www.canonrumors.com/2011/02/canon-officially-acknowledges-lensid-issue/

Not sure what the incompatibility issue really is, but i use mine on a 40D and 50D and never noticed any dramas it is damn sharp on a crop body by the way.

Hope this helps :)

Ive just taken hold of a sigma 70-200 f2.8 but not the os version! using it on my 5d and so far it rocks although i havent used on anything worth talking about yet! nice images even with the sigma 2x converter on.

Thanks up to now for the replies. Do you know if there is a lot of difference between the Sigma & Canon Apart from the price

The Sigma is a little slower to focus but not much, of course then theres the image quality which on the Canon is outstanding but theres varying differences on the Sigma as there are several models to choose from, Quality control has always been another issue with Sigma lenses, 9 out of 10 seem to be good but you could also end up with a total Dog.

Whats your budget Arthur?????

Hi Gary. Thanks for the advice it looks like it will be the Canon. Budget is about £800 - £1000 for the lens.

Plenty of budget there Arthur, for your top end you can pick up a used Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS version, theres some on EOS classifieds as we speak, for £6-700 you can get the non IS version

Hi Gary. The problem with that at the minute is I can't get onto the classified page.:shake: I uploaded a couple of pictures yesterday that I took at a match. It's the 1st time I've uploaded any on here but it was a rush last night and I must not have done them right as the picture quality is crap compared to what I have in the files on the computer. (I'm not saying these are any where near good though). Which is why I'm wanting some better gear to get something decent.
