Has anyone heard of this lens? It's supposed to be released very soon and is designed for APC type sensors, providing 1:1 magnification and (a minimum focus distance of 23cm) )

Sorry if news on this has been posted elsewhere. I did a search but nothing came up.

Sorry, I just checked this on dpreview, and the minimum focus distance is 23cm .. not what I originally stated 10cm!

I love Tamron optics, but I don't understand the point in this lens. Why DX only?

f/2 is going to no use for macro, you'll stop down. For portraits its an interesting lens, and f/2 would be nice for bluring backgrounds.

Very strange...

Exactly my thoughts .. why for APC sensors only

As for the f/2, my guess was like yours .. would be nice on APC sensor bodies to shoot portraits.

And considering the Voightlander 58mm f/1.4 manages full frame and to be a stop faster. OK so its not a macro... but ... odd...!

Evening Wail, Just found this:

My wife wanted a macro lens as she does not like borrowing mine and would rather have her own so I might well look at this if it is any good. There is a Nikon equivalent though so it needs to be better or cheaper!

Actually, I've never tried the Voigt. with extension tubes. If I am feeling better tomorrow then I will do that to see what magnifications I can achieve.

Thank you for the link.

Frankly, if you want a macro in that range then (unless this Tamron is going to be super cheap) I would consider the Nikon AFD 60, or even the 55mm AIS macro (this one is only manual focus) which I've seen on B&H site (USA) for $350.

The 55mm AI-S is just an amazing lens.

I have two.. a tatty one I just chuck in my bag, and a minty one I daren't use :)

Tamron has announced the development of a 60mm F2 macro lens that provides 1:1 magnification for APS-C sensors. The lens, called the SP AF60mm F/2.0 Di II Macro 1:1, will be available in Canon, Sony and Nikon mounts (with a built-in autofocus motor to allow AF to operate on the D40, D40X and D60). Its design, which incorporates two low dispersion elements to to compensate for various aberrations, lets you achieve 1:1 magnification at a working distance of 100mm. The F2 maximum aperture makes it a whole stop faster than other lenses in the same class. Price and availability will be announced later.

Interesting lens. :)

I wish someone could explain to me why they've gone to the effort of making this an f/2 lens? Surely it would have been a lot easier & cheaper to just keep it at f/2.8 or smaller ?

If you plan to sell either of the two, please do let me know :)

Sure, I thought of that; and that does seem to be the only logical explanation. However, most macro lenses, bar the Ziess Planar, are f/2.8 and that's a good enough dof.

Of course, with a crop sensor f/2.8 would give a bigger dof than on a full-frame sensor; but it's still shallow enough.

.

Canon do a 60mm EF-S Macro, that is for APS-C only and people buy it.
This is Tamron taking their competition seriously... interesting lens too.
