Am looking for a 24-70 for a canon 5D mk lll , but the canon 24-70 is very expensive. But noticed this Tamron in a magazine and wondered if anyone had used one or any experience of this lens

I have both the Tamron and the Canon 24-70 (one for each of our two bodies). Canon is perhaps the slightly sharper of the two but the Tamron is not far behind. Aside from sharpness IQ is very very close. The Canon is also better built. That is not to say the Tamron is flimsy as it is far from that. Add in the VC on the Tamron, the fact it is a lot lighter and is also a lot cheaper and I feel it represents far better value for money.

I certainly am not disappointed with my Tammie.
 
Your thread got me thinking so I took a series of identical photos using the Canon 24-70 and the Tamron 24-70 at F2.8 to F11 at 70mm. All were shot at 200 iso on my 6D.

All were shot in RAW and needed only minor processing in ACR. I then compared them at 100%. The Canon was the slightly sharper at F 2.8 and F4, they could not be split at F5.6 and at F8 and F11 the Tamron was marginally sharper.

Both lens autofocus very quickly and to be honest on photos at normal size you would be hard put to tell the difference between them.

One interesting fact did emerge. The shots taken with the Tamron covered a greater area than the Canon so either the Canon shoots over 70mm or the Tamron under 70mm at maximum.

Valb - as you have an experience with using 24-70 lens I would like to ask if you recommend using it on 60D. I want to replace my 18-135 walkabout lens with f2.8 lens and assessing most of my photos I realised that I mostly use 24-70 range. Im planning to get 70-200 lens in near future too and have 50 f1.8 already. I just wonder if 24-70 or 17-55 would be the better choice. Thank you.

The Canon 24-70 is a great lens and being an L series lens is fantastically built. The 17-55 whilst not an L series is also an extremely good lens. However I personally would have two reservations about using the 24-70 on a 60D. Firstly it is a heavy lens and, if I am right, the 60D is a fairly light body which might make the two together feel slightly unbalanced. Secondly the 60D is a cropped body which effectively makes the 24-70 into a 38-112. The 17-55 is effectively 27-88 on a cropped body. One of the decisions you need to make is do you need the longer range (Canon's 24-70's effective 112mm) or the wider range (Canon's 17-55's effective 27mm). The 17-55 also has the advantage I believe of image stabilisation and is much cheaper than the 24-70.

I doubt if you would be disappointed with either but it really comes down to what you will use the lens for and whether you need the wider capability of the 17-55 or longer reach of the 24-70.

Just to cloud the waters a little have you considered a Canon 24-105L. Another great lens, reasonably priced, has IS and doesn't weigh too much so would feel balanced on a 60D. This on a cropped body gives you an effective range of 38-168. The only downside compared to the other two is that it is an F4 lens not F2.8.

Thank you valb. I was initially thinking of 24-105 lens which appealed to me as L lens. However having 18-135 f3.5-5.6 I realized that I really want f2.8 not f4 lens. Thats why I ruled that one out. I think I should stick to 17-55 choice as I am hoping that due to better quality glass and light (upgrade to 18-135) my photos taken inside or in low light will be a bit sharper and colours nicer. Thank you.
