Tamron 18-250mm F3.5-5.6 replacing Nikon kit lenses

I am thinking of getting the above lens to replace my 2 nikon kit lenses, a 18-55mm and a 55-200mm.

Is this lens any good?
 
It's quite a long range to have without image stabilisation, even if you have a reasonably steady hand, unless your going to use a tripod, Tamron do a 18-270mm with VR :)
 
I have liked Tamron lenses since my film days. I have a 18 - 250. It is also marketed as Pentax 18 - 250 (actually discontinued although there are a few to be had) but it is the same lens.

I was a little bit disappointed in the sharpness and I have image stabilisation in the camera body. I have also tried it using a tripod. It got a very bad report for performance in a mag recently, but then you never know if magazine reviewers have hidden agendas.

I since got a Tamron 55 - 300 and it produces very good results.

I will persevere with the 18 - 250 for a while (because it has a good range that helps avoid having to change lenses. Perhaps also when the weather gets brighter I'll be able to stop it down further and get sharper results).

If I had got the chance to try it for a few days before buying it I would have kept my 18 -55 kit lens and added the 55 - 300.
 
Can't comment on the tamron but would recommend keeping the 18-55mm kit lens. Have just tried my D60 with 18-55mm non VR indoors at the Leeds Royal Armouries and got some great shots without flash. I have just sold my 55-200mm non VR on ebay for £100 and replaced it with the nikon 70-300mmVR.
What are you shooting?

We didnt have VR in the 80s 90s why do we need it now?????:shrug:

Or the 70's :shake: but neither did we have digital, PC's or MacDonalds ;)

THe Nikkors are fine lenses, I doubt that the Tamron would be any improvement.
 
It really makes no difference what lens you use ...if you need VR and if your hands shake to much you aint gonna be a good photographer or sniper

We did have PCs in the 70s But they cost so much we couldnt afford them the first being the fairlight system but it was aimed mainly at Richard Claydermann lol
 
The VC in Tamron's 28-300 is superb. Best VR system for Nikon, certainly better than anything Nikon has done.
 
VR can have its uses, in the Royal Armouries you are not aloud to use flash(or tripod) and as I am quite new I only had my kit lens option and I would have had even more success if I had the VR version(nikon 15-55mm 2.8f possible future options funds allowing)

The future is bright the past is.......

The 'PC' at our college took up a whole room :D no windows either ;)

VR has its place, but not something I need in a lens (I have only 1), be interesting to know what the OP intended using the lens for.
 
Funnily enough I get far more joy out of my old lens, ie manual focus 28mm, or a nice MF macro than I do with newer lenses with "gee wizz" features.

Can't beat a lovely old AI-S lens, no gimmicks, just old skool building quality, dreamy handling, and lovely IQ :love:

Thanks for the replys, sorry I have not been back for a while.

I tend to shoot a range of things, I tend to just wander around and shoot whatever takes my fancy which is why I am looking at a 18-200(or more) lens so that I can just take the camera with one lens attached to save me lugging lots of kit around and having to change lenses. It will also be used when I go on holidays

I have also seen the sigma 18-200mm is that any better as I saw some bad reviews for the tamron

It will be used with a Nikon D80 if that makes any difference
