hi all ,

Tamron 17-50mm Aspherical (IF) vs. Tamron 17-50mm VC

which is better in regards of optical quality (will be used at f2.8 quite a lot on DX body)

Depends if you crop 100% all the time. For me I rarely crop 100%/pixel peep and have found the VC very useful in low light/hand held :)

Best of both world's here, non vc tamron and ibis!

Tried both and I was happier with the non VC version which I ended up buying. Make sure and buy from a reputable dealer as there seems to be a large degree of differences from copy to copy and the 5 year warranty provided might prove useful if you run into any issues. I got mine from WEX.

will go in town and buy it from jacobs or jessops whoever will have them in stock.

will try before tho

thanks guys for all the help

just got one from jacobs digital. they even made me a discount too at £289.99

will try it out tonight (at least i hope so)

I had one, non VC, optically very, very good. I`m sure you`ll enjoy it..........

i have the vc version for canon, i am more than happy with sharpness, but i think it struggles a bit to auto focus in dull situations, well worth the £350 price tag

yep i'm pretty happy right now

registered with tamron for extra 5 years warranty too.

Is the autofocus on these really as much of a problem as some of the reviews say? cant remember which in particular it was but it made it sound truly terrible. I want one as a walkabout for travelling in places like vietnam where autofocus will be key.

Is it worth the extra 100 quid or so for the sigma 17-50 2.8??

I think if you can try them and pick one that you are happy with they are very good value for money.
Personally I am going to get the sigma.

I had the vc version with my d7000 and the focus was all over the place. One scene it would back focus the next scene front focus. I exchanged it the next week and got the non-vc which was spot on.

Oh I tried a second vc version and also another d7000 body and it was consistent all the time.

I tried the VC version in jessops today and have to say the focussing was a bit crazy, hunted a lot at 50mm when trying to focus on something relatively close, and I dont mean like 30cm close but about a meter away. Wasnt impressed much tbh. They didnt have a non vc one in the store and they dont seem to stock the sigma but I think I will save the extra and go for the sigma.

Im willing to sacrifice a bit of edge sharpness for pictures that are actually in focus!

The AF is definitely a problem in even remotely low light. I switched to one for a couple of concert shoots and the amount of AF failures was indescribably frustrating. I'm sending it back to Tamron to see if they can do anything with it, but if not, I'll be dumping the thing. Just not worth the hassle to me.

My thoughts exactly, I dont want half my pictures to be for the bin because they are all out of focus! Going to have to save for a while as I "accidently" bought the sigma 10-20mm wide angle today!
