Looking to get a new lens for my 550D in the next few months.. Currently got a 50mm 1.8. Not decided between wideangle (10-20ish) or a standard zoom lens yet.

I do a mix of photography and videography (well just starting), but take the video more seriously, so pictures don't have to amazingly sharp etc. Would be nice though :D Fixed aperture would be nice + around 2.8? Budget around £300 ideally?

For a 'normal zoom' i've been looking at the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8, seems like a decent choice - or is it? Reviews say good for video, but not the sharpest for photography. Any other suggestions?

And for wideangle i'm not too sure, seen one from sigma and the 10-22mm from Canon, which is kinda out of my price range.

Cheers :)

The Tamron is a good lens and amongst the sharpest in its price bracket.
You should be able to get the f2.8 non VC version for around £200.

On the ultra wide angle market there is the Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 and the f3.5 constant.

In an ideal world the best setup for your camera would be the Canon 17-55mm f2.8 and the Canon 10-22mm but you would be forking out a pretty penny for them.

If your on a budget, look at the 3rd party lens makers as stated above.

Others will be along shortly to tell you about other makers and their range which I'm not familiar with.

Hope this helps

I'd agree the Tamron 17-50 is a good lens. I've got the VC which is supposed to have inferior IQ and sharpness in particular to the non VC, but I've found if fine. I also have the Canon 10-22 and it has great IQ, but for the majority of stuff you may find it too wide.

Here is a picture i took last week with the Tamron 17-50 VC.

Where did you see the reviews?

Most reviews for the 17-50 say how good it is, and most compare it favourably to the Canon 17-55 f2.8. I would doubt you would be able to find a better lens than the Tamron in your budget.

Stupar, stevebuk Cheers, that helps.

Dave1 Mainly on youtube reviews, will see if i can find them.

I have both the Tamron 17-50mm and Sigma 10-20mm which I use on my 550D. I do a pretty broad range of photography and find I dont use the 10-20mm as often as I thought I might, although it is a very good and generally sharp lens. The 17-50mm though is rarely off my camera. I find it very sharp, great in low light and contrary to what some reviews say it focuses fairly well in low light too. Focus speed isnt the fastest but as I dont do anything sports related I dont mind this too much.

Hope this helps

Ok, but can I suggest you place a bit more reliance on reviews by more well known (and impartial) reviewers. Remember, anyone can post anything to YouTube and there is no oversight as to the veracity of what is posted.

A quick google produces many reviews, just from page 1 of the search comes these as examples:

They are all worth a read.

Yeah that's true, and my first stop is usually the larger photog review sites, but I also like to use youtube. But point taken :)

The Tamron seems to fit the bill, so thanks everyone for the help :)
