Should I get the Canon 50mm 1.8 , or should I sell my 18-55mm is kit lens & purchase the tamron 17-50 mm 2.8 ?

I presently have a 40D & 24-105mm on the way & would like a quicker lens to compliment it for indoor/ lower light shots

I got the Tamron off ebay recently and wasn't impressed, only marginal difference from kit lens. There seems to be some debate on those made in China(mine) and those made in Japan.
Mind, my kit lens is poor as well. My Panasonic compact is miles better!!!

I've also just bought a Tamron 17-50 from e-bay, but I find it miles better than the kit lens, soooo much sharper! I was also thinking of getting the 50mm 1.8 but I don't think I'll bother now.

I'm going for the Canon EF-S 55-250mm and probably a fixed 28mm.

I've had a tamron 17-50 for 3 years now. Had it on a 400d and now on a 550d. The quality is stunning for the price. Wide open it is far better than the kit lens and at f4 and above you'd be hard pressed to find anything thing sharper on a crop.

I actually prefer it to my 24-70 on the 550d (i have a 5d mk2 also)

I bought my Tamron 17-50mm Non VC from LCE a few months ago. The image quality really is fantastic for the money and in a totally different league to the standard Canon 18-55mm kit lens. I have heard a few people mention issues on a few of them though, specially the VC version and versions bought on Ebay from China etc.

Strange question being as these lenses are for very different purposes,do you do a lot of low light then its the Canon or a lot of wide angle then its the Tamron, and if its the canon then why not keep the kit lens for when you need a wider view
