In November I bought this big lens. We don't have a dedicated photo/camera shop here so we had to travel 5 hours to buy it.
Though we had planned on going to this place to celebrate our anniversary. Looking on the net I found the shop was there and ordered it.
I began to play a little with it to see what I would get out of it. And I was really happy with the results.
Then the other day I just could not get it to focus as I was trying to get another moon shot.

The next morning I got up and went out in daylight hours and tried to see if I was doing something wrong.
No matter what I did I just could not get it to focus on anything at all.
I sent the people where I bought it from an email and to make this short I now have to send it to a repair shop.
I really miss not having the chance to use it.
And I think this a one of thing that has happened and look forwards to getting it back all fixed up.

This lens apparently had a problem when released, affecting some lenses more than others and needed a firmware update @mikew knows all about it :)

One reason why I ended up going for the Sigma version. But when these lenses work they're pretty impressive. I hope you don't have to wait too long, but you'll enjoy it when you get it back.

I bought the same lens a couple of weeks ago, second-hand from a reputable dealer. My first real outing with it was yesterday at the BTCC meeting at Thruxton, and it worked fine, though it's a heavy old beast to lug about.

How would I know whether it requires the firmware upgrade? Is there any way of telling (e.g. from EXIF data) what the current firmware version is?

@Wasp - hope that you get your lens back from repair soon.

The first one i had suffered focus freeze,it would work most of the time then just not attempt to focus,Tamron had it back twice even fitted a new focus motor but it still did it,later i tried another and it focused great but i felt it wasnt as sharp as the first one,the focus freeze was not just me loads of people had/have it to some degree.
I now think the Sigma C is a better lens at a similar price.

Wow and here I thought I had done my homework on this.
Going by the comments I hadn't done a full homework time.
It has been sent away to the only place in Australia the other day.
Postage was close to $60.00 so it stung a little.
But as mentioned it is a heavy b****r so I knew it was going to cost a little but that I wasn't ready for.

When this lens was working right it was a great lens and I was getting some top results.
I hope to get it back in that condition as I have started to shoot the moon and this works well on that.

@Wasp did you send it to Tamron? I'm sure they will refund the postage as it is a design fault

I've had this lens virtually from when it was released for Nikon. I have had the issue a few times and it's a heart stopping moment the first time it happens I must admit, especially if you are not aware of the problem which I wasn't. The only way I can get mine to focus again is by removing it and reattaching, switching the camera off and back on again does nothing.
The lens is almost permanently fixed to the front of my D750 now and for the few times that it has frozen I am willing to put up with it rather than send it back. As others have said, results are impressive but if mine was freezing regularly I would definitely have a repair.

I phone the people who I sent it to and the lady said that the Aperture Arm had come loose in it and they done some firmware updates to it.
So it should be here by the end of the week or very early next week.
I will post up what they came up with when I get it back.

My lens is giving me no end of grief attached to my D810.

I've had a lot of issues with the sharpness at the 600mm end but last night it kept focus freezing on me at key moments. It used to freeze on my D600 but that was rare.

It did it about 10 times last night :(
