With yet another Nikon launch not hitting the spot, I need to have a look at what Canon can offer. It will be a wrench to leave if I did but is there a something equivalent to a D700 - i.e. FF, full sized body (i.e. non consumer)? Know nothing about the Canon range at all!

I guess the 5D MK III is where to look. Don't know much about their other bodies outside of that and the 1Dx, they seem to have a bundle of other DX and FX ones with similar numbers besides.

Simple, 5D2, its Canons equiv of D700, AF isn't as good. Next up is the newer 5D3, AF is very good. Im surprised none of the Nikons interest you, they have every base covered.

I've a 5D3 and its very good, but you need to let us know what you need - I'm guess portraits/wedding - so either a 5DII or 6D should be fine and considerably cheaper - better to put the "extra" cash into glass.
Just be sure to look into dynamic range - while the Canon is no slouch the Nikon offerings do appear to have better range (although check for yourself as I'm just going on hearsay) - also try out a Canon body as it may not suit your shooting style.

5D3 is the best semi-pro offering within the Canon range. The 6D is it's much cheaper brother, but it lacks dual memory card slots and the more complex AF of the 5D3. IQ is extremely similar between the two with the 5D3 having slightly more (smaller) pixels but the 6D having slightly better low light abilities.

If you rely on one camera for professional use then the 5D3 will be best. It is better built and has more features. The 6D makes an ideal second body, or a great entry into FF for non-pro use.

Thanks. It is wedding and portrait mainly, the new d750 looks good but it's the small non pro body I can't stand.

Will take a look at the mark 3 then

5D3 - 152 x 116.4 x 76.4mm

D750 - 141 x 113 x 78 mm

Not much in it. Agreed though, I loved my D700s build etc.

Have you looked at the cost? Your profile lists two Nikon bodies and five lenses - £housands.

And what for? The D750 is 6mm shorter than the D700, and a great camera IMHO. And you've not even seen one yet, let alone used it. More similar to a Canon 5D3 than any Nikon, at least on paper, and should be even better (if not by much).

I went from Nikon DX to a second hand Canon 5D2, but I had very little to carry forward had I bought a Nikon FX body in terms of FX lenses, speedlights etc. So I think that the post by Hoppy is pertinent, you have already bought into the Nikon FX system and would face substantial costs to acquire Canon equivalent lenses. I have kept the Nikon gear but won't add to it, it is used as backup or for when I need better auto-focus than my particular Canon body manages, or to use my 10-24mm DX wide angle lens, I don't yet have a FF wide angle equivalent. It does mean I have had to learn 2 interfaces, and that's before I take into account my M4/3 cameras, but perhaps perversely, I enjoy comparing and using different cameras and their quirks.
