I'm off to Prague on Monday with my missus and I'm bringing my camera and some/all my bits with it. Firstly, I'll be carrying the stuff on the plane with me as there's no way I'm leaving it in the hands of a baggage handler. I don't have a bag with separating compartments, just a Crumpler XXL Pretty Boy. I was wandering if anyone had any issues at airports with carrying their gear on a plane with them?

Also, I'm trying to decide on what to bring with me. Currently I have a 18-70 DX, 50 1.8, 70-300 VR and a Tamron 70-200 2.8. I've no issue bringing the lot, but I was thinking of leaving the VR lens behind. Pictures will be of a general nature (people, buildings etc) but would like a few 'good ones' to take home to print for the walls at home.

I've taken took my gear in an XXL with ryan air and had no problems - although it was in my backpack, but they scanned it.

I don't know about the lens quality (or photography full stop), but I would take the Tamron and the DX for lanscape/architecture. I guess if you have space for the 50 then take that also.

i just been to the USA and had no problems with x rays or the plane. I used a Crumpler 7500. I used a 50mm f1.8, 18-200 and a 17-85mm i wouldn't have used a 70-300mm if i had took it.

I've had no problems taking kit on board. X-ray scans do not appear to cause any problems either. For Prague think architecture and landscapes. Go with the wide angle zoom for daytime, and the 50mm for night time pictures. If you have a mini tripod, then add that as well.

Where in the usa did you go? did you not miss the 70-300 because you had 200 reach with the superzoom lens? Or did you not use the Telephoto end at all?

Matt

i would be tempted to take them all on the off chance you may need that extra reach if you only went with 200mm

I went to Las Vegas. I didn't miss the 70-300 as I was walking a round a lot, I really didn't want to carry everything, I did also have my wide angle lens.
I found that I was using the 17-85mm the most.

Oh right, Im off to vegas in the summer, will take my 70-300 though as we are going to Yosemite and San Fran, Im sure it will come in handy at some point!

Unless I was going specifically to take photographs I reckon I'd leave my SLR and lenses at home. Since I got my G9 I've pretty much only taken that with me and I've found that I've found myself with more photo opportunities than with the SLR's.

I think that some of it is due to the fact that you disappear in to the crowd with a compact and in my case I have taken may more memorable photos than if I had the SLR with me. Additionally, me with all my gear was a pain in the arse for the people I was with because it was like I was on a photo shoot and they were on a holiday.

These days the quality of compacts is pretty good (I love the G9) depending on what you are using the images for obviously.

So try a compact only and see how you feel. I tell you its liberating.

As it happens im going to Prague on Monday aswell. I have a thread on it. Im taking my only two lenses- the sigma 50mm f/1.4 and nikkor 28mm AI-S. I really don't know what people need the really long reach for unless its for wildlife on holidays? Or manybe im just so used to using the 50? I only got the wideangle a couple days ago.

I mostly used my wide-angle but also found the zoom lens handy for certain shots - esp. get up close on some fantastic stonework/architecture detail.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll take the 18-70, 50 and 70-200 (just in case) I know where you are coming from Badger, but I no longer have a P+S (but wouldn't mind a G9/10) so it has to be the SLR. Thankfully Clare (my better half) enjoys taking a few shots too and has a keen eye for architecture (thanks to her dad, who is an achitect LOL) so its win, win for both of us.

Next up is incuring the stuff. There will be about £2k of gear with me so who are the people to see about covering this should the worst happen.
