Sorry if this is another noob question but I want to know what I'm doing before I go out taking pictures where people might be in the shot...

Can anyone confirm whether I am 'allowed' to take pictures:

(a) In a shop (like a supermarket) and what, if any, permission I need to get first.

(b) In a public area, like a town centre around the shops (but not in them).

(c) An open market type place, where there are stalls outside.

(d) Any other situation where people or their shops or merchandise may be snapped.

Thanks in advance.

Julia

A shop is private property, you'll need permission from the manager/owner. If it's a large chain you'll have a hard time getting it.

Public areas around shops are often not public at all but owned by a "centre" for the shops, best to check first.

Thanks, was just reading the other thread about the whole 'are you a terrorist because you have a SLR out' situtation and I'm thinking that even if I am technically allowed to take pictures around people I might avoid it for the time being anyway!!

If you're down your local high street on the street you don't need permission, i.e. on public property, you don't even need peoples' permission to photograph them.

Regarding the 'terrorist' thread, the op there should have known better, railway and underground stations have never allowed photography without permission and are the place you are most likely to get stopped if you do.

Cutsie, there is a pretty comprehensive legal guide in this months digital photo mag (i think), even goes as far as giving a diagram showing wheres legal and wheres not.
