There is a really nice gift shop on my street, they arrange their gifts beautifully and have some nice spotlights that set the mood. I'd like to go in and take some shots, but I don't want to just go in and assume it's okay - I shop there myself so don't want to be rude. My O/H says that I could offer to send them the photos to put on their site or facebook etc. as an incentive. Are there any other ways that I could persuade them? I've never took photos of (or inside) shops so unsure of what the reaction would be.

Just mention (drop hints) while your shopping in there that you think it's great how they have setup the shop and would like to photograph it? If they say yes then tell them that you'll forward any images on to them if they wanted copies! No harm in giving it ago

Thanks Andy. As they do themed and seasonal displays (valentines day, easter, mothers day etc) I'd like to do regular shoots so hopefully they'll be fine with it.

You could always try simply asking nicely if you can take a few shots when they're quiet.

If they won't play ball, wait for a dark evening and shoot the window from outside - which is, after all, where it's been designed to be viewed from. If you're standing on a public street, they have few grounds for complaint.

I spoke to them the other day, they were fine with it but they're low on stock at the moment after the Christmas rush so are just waiting for deliveries. I offered to send them the pics as an incentive, as with a few other shops too ("ye olde" sweet shop and a bridal shop).

Sorry if I have too much of my business head on today.....................but as a future plan this could be turned to your advantage! Rather than just give them copies make sure to supply them with a usage license along the lines of:-

I Dawn (insert name as you see appropriate) the copyright holder of these images give Bloggs & Co (inset business name) a perpetual license to use the images listed below for all your promotional materials including print and web use.

Now others with greater experience will likely chime in with perhaps a better crafted way of phrasing it but the reason I suggest it is because even though no money is changing hands (i.e. them paying you for the images) you are making clear to them that it is "an arrangement between you and them" and makes clear that you are licensing them not 'giving them away'. Afteral there could be a time if they are delighted with the results they wish to have more of your services ad that is when you need to consider that your efforts have a monetary value.

Oh, you did not say other than the displays are so nice why you wish to take the pictures???

Thanks @Box Brownie very helpful tip! While I'm happy to continue down my current job path (Graphic Designer) I may want to get serious with photography part time so a usage licence statement such as the one you provided is a great idea.

I'm fascinated with photography themes and I'd like to start one on my local community, as I live in a village and would like to capture the charm.
