Taking gear to China - specifically pocket sized/compact camera

Hi all.

I'm off to a job in Shanghai next week - I've already submitted a list of all of the pro gear I'm taking to chinese embassy, in preparation for getting my visa sorted this week.

Thing is, I would like to take a compact along to get a few snaps at the airports, travelling etc. Problem is, I haven't actually bought it yet, so don't have a serial number (and the visa forms are already gone).

So, basically my question is, can I carry a compact camera on my person into China (and Dubai for that matter), without them having a record of it?

I went to China last year and didn't list any gear on my visa form.. took my rucksack and didn't have any issues. Unless the laws have changed recently I don't think it will be an issue.

No problems in Dubai. If you're a British citizen the entry formalities are quite ... informal.
