What's the laws regarding taking a DSLR to a premier league match?

Got free tickets to Sunderland v Chelsea next weekend and thought about taking the 60D along.

Plenty of threads on here already covering this topic if you do a search.

Without going into the official moral nitty gritty of needing a 'pass' for PL games - my experience is that it depends on what lens you try to take in rather than what camera.

Was trying to do a search but it kept returning a 404, so not sure if theres a problem with the search function just now?

Would more than likely just be a 55-200mm Siggy.

This thread gives a bit of information regarding the rules for photography at Premier and Football League ground.

Generally, you are not allowed to take pictures in the grounds. You may see people with compacts and obviously mobile phones, (which a blind eye is usually turned because of shear numbers and expectation of rubbish quality with such gear) but try to take pictures with any type of DSLR (or large compact with a huge zoom) and you will probably be stopped. How quickly you are stopped depends on the ground, but all clubs should enforce a no photography policy.

Would they leave you alone if you got caught and put your camera away? Would they confiscate the camera? Would they eject you from the stadium? Maybe someone who has been caught taking pics will tell of their experiences.

If I was paying £25-£100 on a ticket (or even getting one for free ;)), I wouldn't take the risk that I would miss any of the match (arguing/ejected) for the sake of poor images (you wouldn't get anywhere near pro quality from the stands imho) that you would not be able to do anything with.

PS. And unless you are on the front row, a 55-200mm lens would be almost useless imho. Even if you were on the front row a max 200mm would not get you images very far across the pitch.

Take a compact or cameraphone and snap the crowd & enjoy the game. The shots you'll get from the stands aren't worth the hassle you'll have for taking them.

I don't think this has anything to do with the law, more about the terms and conditions of entry to the ground/match. Otherwise, as above.

No, you can't do it, ground regulations state that photography is not allowed at any football league ground and your camera will (should) be confiscated upon entry, or when spotted using it in the stands. :rules: Leave the photography for those of us who are working to be there in that position and just enjoy the game (as I wish I could on occasion when the technology goes wrong).

Edit - Never mind, I see the sticky thread has been linked above, that'll tell you all you need know.:)

You could always give the tickets to me :naughty:
then you wouldn't have to worry about any photographs...

leave the camera at home man! you're going to watch the footy - the pics will be carp from the stands anyway so if you want a record of it just take some screenshots of match of the day

Playing the Devil's advocate, what if you are a tourist and have no where safe to leave your camera?

I'm sure you'll find most clubs are quite accommodating and will gladly look after it for you.

I went to a couple of the games at SOL last season and saw plenty of people near the front of the crowd with Dslr's. None of the stewards took any notice but I personally wouldn't chance it.

I took my compact Lumix which was ok to get a few shots of the keepers and the lads warming up but not much else
