I realised today, that we haven't had a takeaway since mid 2019. So, tonight I am going to order from the local Chinese place which has a good reputation and by the look of it will cost less than £20. I am really looking forward to it, I just hope it delivers (if you will pardon the pun).

Takeaways here have been a huge disappointment in the last year or so (not that we have many options - lots of Indian, Chinese, Kebab and Pizza, but no Thai or other interesting food). Every time we've ordered Indian, from about 5 different places now, something is missing. With the Chinese places, each does something really well but none do everything well. The other options are dreadful. The only good takeaways we've had don't do deliveries nor are linked to a delivery company: a Caribbean place and Five Guys burgers, both very good but both a 10min each way drive, not a lot I know but a real pain on a wet night.

I've been helping someone sort out the Amazon rain forest their garden since the tenant moved out
and hadn't touched in in over 2 years!

As payment, I was treated to mixed starters and crispy duck & pancakes,
that was first in quite awhile for me also.
It all went down rather well with a glass of red from a private French vineyard :)

Having a Chinese tonight as well. Have a few really good takeaways round here.

Crispy duch and pancakes for the missus tonight, whilst I look forward to the warming powers of a Singapore Chow Mein.

I have an curry take away place and a fish and chip shop within walking distance.
I'm always put off buy the price of the curry place - it's no more expensive than any where else, but would rather have a sit down meal in a restaurant for the money.
Fish and Chips - the anticipation is almost always better than the meal itself - so greasy and filled with regret

Loads of options available on Just Eat ot Deliveroo - I am hesitant without inspecting the premises to see what it's like in regards to cleanliness.

My usual go to is a pizza - either dominos or papa johns, but not had one in a little while as on a diet!

Excellent Chinese takeaway near us, We had not had any takeaways since 2019 but have had 2 chinese takeaways in the last month.
The only downside is that I have to collect from the restaurant as they do not deliver - 5 min walk, on the upside the prices have not changed since 2019 :)

Last time I had a takeaway was when we moved to the current house 1987 when the kitchen was not functioning the first day. Went to a restaurant for lunch today though. I have never eaten at an Indian restaurant as neither I or my wife can stand the taste. We did used to eat Chinese but no longer aware of a really good Chinese restaurant locally. If you do like strongly spiced food, try Indonesian.

Wife's birthday tonight so also having a chinese. Doesn't happen often these days but fortunate to have quite a few decent places to order food from around here.

we like a nice curry but it’s more difficult now to get a decent takeaway one locally so we normally get a Chinese

There is an Indian take away down the hill from us, every night the aroma drifts up the hill, sometimes I resist!:naughty:

Really easy to replicate Indian takeaway at home, still haven't managed to get close with Chinese.

I eat Chinese once a week on average. I used to swap about; one week Chinese, one week Kebab, but as the Kebab House has recently increased their prices by 60% (blaming fuel price increases), I told them to not bother coming again.

I never buy Indian takeaway as I can cook Indian meals just as well myself (and do regularly). I can cook most Chinese stuff myself too, but it's a lot more work than BIR Vindaloo or Phaal, so I don't bother. Besides, it doesn't work out that much cheaper, but curries most definitely work out a LOT cheaper.

I'm a huge fan of BIR cooking. The wife not so much with all the base gravy in the freezer. Also do a lot of Thai as well these days make my own green and red pastes.
Rice is the best saving as well 20kg sacks a time, and cook it in a rice cooker and it's perfect.

Never eat Chinese or Indian, not the best with a Garlic allergy
Fish and chips is ok, but quite often mediocre and crazy expensive these days.
Long gone as a cheap dinner on a Friday evening or another night too when cash was short.

I'm not a fan of curry's TBH. (except)
The only Indian food I like is Biryani. The local take-away serves it with a (mild) vegetable curry.
So that all works well.

The local fish and chip shop is run by Eastern Europeans and also sells Kebabs.
The fish and chips were a bit rough when they first took over, but once they "cracked it"
it is now rather good. Very generous portions too.

I'm disappointed with the F&C our two local shops sell as the batter melts before I can get them home, by car. They disappoint me every time. Years ago I could walk home with F&C and the batter was still lovely but these days it's rubbish. Every time we have them I say I'm not going to buy them again.

We have a take away most Saturdays. I normally have a 10" Margarita pizza which is £3.50 and totally lovely. I sometimes get a cheesy garlic bread for Sunday too :D

The Chinese take away that I frequent used to be called Ming Hing. I think they eventually realised and changed the name. :p

Well, that was £18.10 well spent. The crispy, aromatic duck was the best my missus has had and she also enjoyed the pancakes with the sauce. We had a couple of spring rolls which were exceptional and the Singapore Chow Mein was everything I had hoped for. It was washd down with a Provence rose which I brought back from France (6 Euros).
Best thing is, that after all the pleasure, I was 100g lighter than yesterday morning.

Saturday is curry, beer and film night here.....a night off from life basically.

My favourite is Chicken Tikka Madras, we have 2 'carry oots' as they call them here in the village, both do some dishes better than the other but they are both very good. The same dish from a town nearby nail their currys but it's a 20 minute drive and the food cools by the time I get home. I like my food piping hot, my wife doesn't mind if it's cooled a bit. My wife likes milder dishes and will share hers with our daughter. My daughter though has a high spice tolerance, she can manage Madras too.

We have one Chinese in the village, again very good and one just down the Valley that is also very good.

Our chippy is also good.

We had a curry last night, Indian,as a treat as we've had a trying week. Tonight will be Chinese or chippy, being a Saturday.

I enjoy a doner kebab too, although without the sauces, just seeded chilli sauce (it's kept under the counter and he calls it 'suicide sauce'), garlic mint sauce and lemon juice, with chopped, raw onion. Kebabs nearby can be hit and miss but one place, suprisingly called Kebab City, nails them, everytime.

Haven't had a takeaway since lockdown, when we used to get a click-and-collect from Wagamama every Thursday. For us, the joy of not needing to cook is doubled (if not trebled/quadrupled!) by not having to wash up, so we now eat in at Wagamama instead. I loathe deliverpoo and justedible with a passion so won't use them - if we want a takeaway, I'll collect it or make sure the place does its own deliveries.

i find only certain food works as a takeaway , currys do for sure as you just get them home and pop it in the micro just for 45 seconds and bingo
chinese takeaways are awful barely edible food full of MG and food colourings
pizza can be ok but you need to collect and get in home like nikka lauda still hot hot

deliveroo and just eat take one hell of a commission, there must be next to no money being made by the takeaway. I'll sometimes browse the apps then see if the takeaway have their own website / ordering platform. Much better for them, and usually free delivery!

We have a lovely Chinese restaurant us. You can order via Deliveroo, Uber vEats and Just East but there are some dishes that are only available if you order direct from the restaurant.

The Chinese I used was just a quick walk from us. I must try some Thai or Indonesian food, because that is another level of flavour. I was amazed by the price hikes on delivery pizzas, they seem to be through the roof and I would rather make one from scratch. I think fish and chips for two (no extra sides) would have been near £20 from our local places. I noticed that large chips in a lot of places are a fiver now, that really shocked me.
Mind you, celeb chef Tom Kerridge charges nearly £50 for a fish supper. We are living in mad times.

I've certainly had a few bad takeaways but it's usually pizza that's bad. Rubbish American pizza though Vs proper crust.
What's MG?
The Chinese near here is fantastic really authentic stuff.

MG - Monosodium Glutamate. This is a substance commonly usd in Asian foods. If you imagine the Chinese dishes with a sauce - beef in black bean sauce for instance, they have a kind of glossy thing going on.

They used to really overdo it at one time, :(

Although it doesn't seem to be quite so heavily used these days.

Ahh MSG. I use it myself, great stuff. You probably eat more of it than you realise. Please don't be one of the many that don't really understand it.

Colour or B&W? :P

Me too, I use it in all my Chinese cooking (and other) - it REALLY makes a difference. (y)

As for the people who spread rumours saying how bad it is - it's not. Just do some basic research; 'The truth is out there . . .'

No Chinese take away since covid, not missed them, avoid purchase of anything marked ‘Made in PRC‘ infact, we have two very good Indian restaurants from where we get take away and a great Nepalese place, pizza, wife makes them herself, couple of good chippies too. Mmm, hungry now.

Wednesday is takeaway night as it's too late to start cooking after my evening class finishes, so chicken kebab from the van or fish and chips. There are two fish and chip shops locally and I use the one that has a queue out of the door, because the food is so much better!
