synchronisation

They should both have an impact on the image - is it obvious from the image that the slave isn't firing?

There is no synch setting, Master on one, slave on the other, make sure the slave receiver can see the master and away you go.

I assume your wanting to use both flash units at the same time...

So the 430 needs to be in slave mode (in-line of site of the 580)...ready to see the 580 fire.
Your 580 should be set as normal..
If you using TTL on the 580 it could be your seeing the pre-flash thus looks like the 480 is miss firing...

What does the photo/subject look like when you try the above?

Depending on your kit you could use this all in TTL and not have worry about anything..

You will need to have the wireless feature on your camera with a pop-up flash.
and both Flash units need to have the wireless feature..(think this is only on the 580ii and 430ii)

Hope that helps.

Are you trying to use a radio trigger and an optical trigger?

I am using one on the camera and the other as a slave on a stand - even right next to each other there was a delay. On the day I will probably use the 580 on an extension lead on a frame next to camera

Doesn't sound right. It should work as Phil suggested.

Are you testing the firing with the flash test button or using the camera? If it's the flash button, both flashes are in ETTL mode & the master is not connected to camera then the slave will fire 1/2s later. Possibly because ETTL is controlled by the camera & as it's absent.........:bonk:

Setting the slave to manual should cause it to fire at same time as the master flash if you're using the master's test button (both flashes off camera).

If you've got the master on camera and test by using FEL button or firing the shutter they should both go off at same time regardless of mode. If not try both flashes in manual mode and then go back to ETTL.
