I have been using 2 430's flash units with umbrellas for portrait shots and the 580 as the master unit,

do i need the camera's sync speed to work the set properly or can i use the power settings on the 430 to adjust the light output.

The 40D is set at 1/125 @ f/8, it's my first time using a portable studio and its all trial by error but the shots i am getting are not that bad to start with.

The main 430 power setting light is set at 1/4 and the other is 1/8.

Any idea's please

The fastest sync speed on the 40D is 1/250th. You can force this setting in the custom functions.

However, the shutter sync speed is really irrelevant in a studio setup as you're not mixing ambient light and flash. It sounds like you're doing fine - just fine tune your settings by adjusting the output of the flash units or moving their positions in relation to the subject

Thanks CT,

I am more than happy with the outcome of this very basic light setup, i think the only problem i had with the setup was the very little space i had, i had some shadows on the back drop which is sorted out and like i say there was not enough space, but otherwise it was good.
