I have a year's sabbatical next year (starting in July) and I'm currently in the process of planning the activities that'll keep me busy during this time. My first trip will be a ski season in Switzerland or France but then I'm looking at heading off to Oz for several months to coach football.

I had assumed I'd be staying in Sydney as it appeared to tick the boxes for things I wanted from the holiday and there were lots of coaching jobs available for qualified coaches. However, I've since read a lot of articles and discussions about how Melbourne is a far nicer place to live and Sydney is the place I should visit.

From scouring these forums, I've seen at least one member from Melbourne and just wondering if visitors or former residents of either city could pip in with their two pence worth. I'd be looking at going out there for four months and would be doing a little bit of time away (couple of weeks in Cairns whilst I dive the Great Barrier Reef and a week or so in Tasmania).

Cheers!

From my limited experience, a week at each on holiday and a few days working in Melbourne...
Stay in Melbourne! St Kilda is good for hanging out on weekends and chilling with coffee and cake. City centre is lovely and a nice feel. Great Ocean Road, Penguin Island etc.etc.
Sydney is a bit sterile but nice and clean. Too touristy though.

Travel about though, virginBlue flights are run like a bus service and is dirt cheap!

Enjoy!

Thanks.

That's pretty much in line with what I'm hearing everywhere. A friend of mine lived in St. Kilda for a year and loved every minute of it. So I reckon I'll have to base myself in-and-around Melbourne and travel to Sydney for a week or two.

VirginBlue seems heaven sent! I was looking at the flights and they run £150 return for much of the NSW/Victoria area!

Just make sure you take plenty of photos so everyone back in blighty can get even more depressed about the weather.

Oh and try not to get bitten by anything.

Just watch out for the fruitbats at night, I was not warned about them when we visited Sydney, and got the biggest fright of my life when one flew not far above my head in Sydney Harbour on our first night there.

None, a mate says its pretty much the same as here but a bit warmer with more crime go for small townships they are more hospitable and much more like the Australia we see in mags, the rest we can see in London, Glasgow NewYork ect, and by the way dont have a few to many as you will get arrested for it on a hot sunny night in the bigger cities, the local plod look out for us
