Given my relative inexperience in photography, I went out and bought as many different lenses and other bits of kit that I could find. Subsequently I now have 7 lenses which are all medium quality, a number of bags, tripods, t/c's, etc..

The lenses I have are as follows:

Canon 17 - 85mm
Canon 300mm
Canon 18 - 200mm
Canon 50mm
Sigma 105mm Macro
Sigma 10 - 20mm
Sigma 150 - 500mm

Sigma 2x TC
Kenko extension tubes

My thinking is as follows:

Sell 150-500, 300, 17-85, 18-200, 50mm
Keep 105 macro, 10-20mm
Buy Canon 28-300mm

My questions are:

Do you think this is a good idea as it will end up costing me quite a bit to do?
Would I be able to couple Sigma 2x TC to 28-300 and get 600 with AF?

Many thanks, any advice appreciated

I'm not Canon user so....
I use the Nikon 28-300 as my general purpose lens on a D800...But it is very "general purpose" and does all well, nothing exceptionally well. I consider it an f/8 lens. I have to assume the Canon version will be the same.

The difference between 300 and 500mm is pretty significant if you do sports/motor sports/wildlife.
I don't think I'd loose the 50mm assuming f/1.8...not out of your kit.
Not sure I would keep a dedicated Macro lens if you have good tubes. My 150mm Macro is one of my least used lenses.
You will NOT be able to use a 2x TC with the 28-300...

I also have a d800e with the Ninon AF-S 28-300, as Steven says, it's a great lens. I have also have a Nikon AF-S 14-24 and a AF-S 50mm f1.4 .. that's my lens collection complete. I think you are right to consolidate, 1: less weight, 2: upgrade to better quality lenses

Hi Andrew

Is the Canon 300 the F4 ? if so then it's not a medium quality lens, it's a very good lens and very well regarded...

Personally, I wouldn't do what you're thinking of as these all in 1 lenses have compromises - I think you'd be disappointed with the results and would regret buying it.

There is no problems in wanting to upgrade, but I would look at what problems or what you feel the limiting factor of your current lens is and then look to upgrade this for that reason...

Oh and no I don't think you'd be able to put the TC on the 28-300 and get a 600, not sure if it would fit, wouldn't AF and I suspect the results would be very poor...

Hope this is of help, any more questions, thoughts, ask away...

I have the Canon 28 - 300mm L lens and I really enjoy using it. Yes it is heavy, but I only need to take one lens with me and it fits inside the Lowepro Slingshot 100 AW with a flash and a few accessories.

Hi Andrew,

I believe that your sigma 2x TC only works properly with Sigma lenses .

What lenses have you used most often ? Looking through the photo's you've taken is there a more commonly used focal length range ?
Depending on what you use most you could consider moving to a 15-85 or 17-55 along with a 70-200 or 70-300 lens ? That would let you move on the 18-200 and 17-85, and possibly the 300mm unless you use that a lot, and may cover most of the costs.
