morning all i was wondering what the best canon camera + zoom lens i could get in a swap for my canon 100-400 lens adding some money if need be maybe a 50d +sigma 50-500 / 150-500
Do you really need two camera's? The 100-400 is an excellent lens wouldn't you regret getting rid of it? I would say you'll get around £800 for the 100-400 depending on age/condition, not sure what a 50d will go for maybe ~£500.
I would suggest that you do not get rid of the 100-400, it is a far superior lens to the sigma's. If you need the extra reach you could try a 1.4 tele convertor this would take the teach up, but you will lose a bit in quality.
Getting a 50d would see very little image improvement unless you shoot high ISO all the time. Yes the look and feel of the camera is different and you can shoot higher fps, but you are sacrificing a quality lens for a mediocre lens.
you would be mad to get rid of a 100-400L in favour a of a Sigma 150-500 OS.
The 150-500 IS good lens but you wouldn't gain any IQ and if anything, the Canon produces slightly better IQ at max focal length.
The 50D would give you weather proofing, better build quality and faster fps.
I'm a bit confused because first you stated 'swap' then later mention keeping the 450D and using two bodies?
You will find it hard to find somone who will want to do a direct swap because I doubt they would want the smaller body.
(bare in mind that the sigma wide open at 400mm is f/6.3 where the canon is f/5.6)
The sigma is an excellent lens, especially for value for money, but if you already own a 100-400 I would not trade it for it.
I tested the lenses in a shop, the 100-400 was as sharp at 400mm f/5.6 as the sigma at 400mm f/8, and the weight was more manageable. I would be perfectly happy with one of the sigma lenses if I couldn't afford the 100-400, but too me the 100-400 was worth the extra cash.
If you trade for the old 50-500, you lose less image quality than with the 150-500 (oddly, the 50-500 is generally considered a bit sharper than the 150-500 and closer to the 100-400), but the older version lacks stabilisation, and the newer stabilised version is actually more expensive than the 100-400.
Do you need a zoom? If you can manage with a prime with no IS, the 400mm f/5.6L is sharper and faster focussing than any of the zooms.
O have the 100-400 and to be honest i would never part with it.
If you are talking about swapping to get a better body with a sigma lens then you still intend to use the zoom capability, so my thing would be save up and just buy either a 40D or 50D second hand and keep the excellent lens you already have.
I got a used 40D with ~7000 shutter actuations fairly recently for just £370.
It's great to use in combo with the 100-400.
A 50D would probably be somewhere between £100-200 more.
If you buy from a site like mpbphotographic, you get a 6 month warranty to go with it.
Not knowing what body you have makes this an odd thing to advise and much as I think the Sigma 150-500 is a great lens I can't see any logic in changing from the Canon 100-400 to possibly gain a few quid towards a different body. Just keep saving until you can afford the body you want.
