Am I crazy? as ive posted elsewhere im thinking of swapping my 5D for a 1dmkII.

Do you think ill be able to do the deal? is anyone out there daft enough to give up their 1dmkII or mkIIN for a swap for a 5D+Battery grip (+5batteries).

Please note this isnt a trade thread and im not asking for offers, im just asking to see if you guys and gals think its a sensible think to do, and whether you think it could actually happen or whether id be wasteing my time advertising the offer.

I think it depends on what you take pictures of. I do think you'll be lucky (certainly to get a MkIIN) as a straight swap. I currently run a 5D and 1DMkII (as it appears you do) and have just done a deal to get a 2nd 1DMkII used for a good price. I plan to keep the 5D as full frame can be nice for walkaround where my 24-70 behaves as it should.

However, for out and about use, having 2x1D will be great. One on the prime and one on the zoom. I really struggle swapping between the two user interfaces in the heat of the moment.

Not really sure if the 'N' gives anything worthwhile. I decided not and went for another identical MkII.

Cheers, I think your right, I do want 3 bodies eventually (3 lenses and I hate swapping when out and about) and I may as well keep the 5D until such a time as I can just buy a 2nd 1dmkII...

There's a few tweaks with the n version but nothing to get too excited about. The larger screen is about the nicest feature, but the startup, and buffer times are improved and it's easier to change between CF and SD cards on the fly.

I'd have thought there'd be too much of a price differential between the two bodies for a straight swap to be on the cards unless the 1D has had some fairly heavy use? You never know though - someone might want a full frame sensor really badly - give it a go. :)

I'll do you a straight swap for my 20D.

True. I should have worded it more as "there was nothing extra worth the extra money for the "N" when I looked at it"

Large screen would be nice but the 1D is an awesome camera without. I just use CF cards as I am too scared of dropping, and losing, SD in the field.

I went through this earlier this year and decided I didn't want to lose full frame, so waited until a suitable 1D at a price came up to add to the fleet!

Like grumpybadger says it depends on what you're shooting. Personally, you wouldn't get your mitts on my MkII for a 5D under any circumstances, a second MkII would definitely be my choice.

I'd hang onto the 5 and have that as a full frame option, a sports photographer I know uses 1dmkII and 5d combo very successfully...I'd say hang onto it.

Being a full frame fan, i'd find it very difficult to give up that option. having said that, I've never owned a 1.3x and dont know how much light-loss / cropping it really amounts to........ I wouldn't, but only you know what your preferences are. Is this a bit of a knee-jerk following the 5D issues you had recently? In which case, dont do somethign you may later regret!!

It's strange that you should mention this, because I have been soul searching the last couple of weeks, as to whether I should go the opposite way!! I was considering swapping my 1D IIN for a 1Ds. As a former film photographer, I have been getting a bit fed up with the way my wide angle lenses are no longer wide angle, and I definitely can't afford a Canon super wide, and the OE manufacturers lenses that I can afford, don't appeal.

I've got my ever reliable 20D if I need the extra distance the crop gives me.

I don't really need the 9fps or the 3200 speeds of the Mk IIn, and was originally planning on buying the 1Ds, until I was made an offer I couldn't refuse.

I'd still consider a mint low numbers 1Ds, so if you could trade your 5D outfit for a 1Ds............ you never know.

I love the 5D, but, id know id get more use out of another 1dmkII...

My favourite kind of photography is motorsport and that means im going to be out in cold, wet, dusty and muddy feilds... Im doubting the 5D has the build quality to survive too long in that environment.

My long term plan is to have 3 bodies, 2x 1dmkII and a 5D... Id use the 5D for shows and competition type shots and the 1dmkIIs for everything else.

Thanks for all the advice, im now certain im just going to wait for my bonus and then buy a 1dmkII/n

A point to consider for Dougdarter is that the 1Ds has .TIFF file extension when shooting in RAW, whereas the 1Dmkii has I think a .CR2 file extension, and the 1Ds software doesn't recognise this, however if you are working in CS2 or Aperture it's not a problem, but it can mean a bit of juggling about.

It's one reason I was considering changing to a 5D from my 1Ds, but think I'd wait for the next 5D upgrade to come out.
