Hi guys, im thinking for taking the Mrs somewhere in europe as a suprise for our 2nd anniversary. I'm on quite a tight budget, so its gonna be budget travel. I was thinking of taking her to Oslo for 4 days in mid november.

Has anyone been there, is it a romantic destination? Would the Fjords be easily accessible from Oslo as a day trip?

Any other suggestions in Europe? Apart from Italy and France (been there too often).

Thanks!

I would have to say - in my opinion, don't rule out what we have on our own shores - Scotland is breathtakingly beautiful, and can be romantic if you find the right places.

Failing that, Ireland is a whole pile of fun. We did a 4 day tour driving from town to town, and had our 1 year anniversary night in Clontarf Castle Hotel in Dublin which is pretty nice. All in all, I would say that the Ireland trip is probably the best "holiday" I've ever had :)

I guess it depends on what you want to do - if you want alone time and don't mind putting in a little effort, spend some time in the highlands. If you want a more party atmosphere, Dublin has to be a winner...

Happy anniversary wherever you go

thank you very much for the suggestions. I am hoping to do UK and Ireland sometime next year, we have a little one on the way and so flying will be a bit harder for most of the next year. Hence im looking to go abroad whilst we can. But keep the suggestions rolling in!

Been in Oslo, but a long time ago.
If you are on a tight budget then be aware that Norway is an expensive country.

According to Wikipedia it is hard to get by on about £60 a head per day even if you stay in hostels.
Can of beer costs about £7.

They also have extreme taxes (higher than ours in some cases)... You'll find this with most of the Scandinavian regions.

Thought about Spain? Barcelona is nice, there's some great things to see and do. You'll possibly spend a little more to get a nicer hotel though.

Venice? Amsterdam? Rome?

What about going a little further afield? There's some cheap flights to the USA at the moment, although you'll need to hunt them out. Bearing in mind how cheap the US can be, offset this against the extra travel cost and it's probably about the same cost as going to mainland Europe. You might need a bit longer than 4 days though.

:agree:

Norway is a beautiful country and I'm sure you'd enjoy it but it is very expensive. Also IMO you might be hard pressed to fill 4 days in Oslo unless you went out to the forests and fjords near Oslo. The main fjords (those that feature in most of the stunning fjord photography you see are well away from Oslo. You can get the train to Bergen (on the west coast near the fjords) from Oslo (very beautiful rail journey) - but it takes about 6-7 hours.

Just a little bit of help, hopes its of use. I'm sure there are more knowledgeable people on TP though that may be able to help.

Richard.

Good point about the US, but we dont have many holidays left this year unfortunately so we'll have to do that another time, because I would love a fly drive type holiday in the US for 2-3 weeks.

Barcelona sounds very appealing. I was also looking at Lisbon, any thoughts from anyone on Lisbon?

Might help to say what we like. We don't drink and are not into the bar/club scene so that doesnt appeal to us. Nice scenery, friendly people and easy to get around is our cup of tea. Having said that, we might as well stay in London lol!

I know you're looking for europe, but as said already this country has some great hide aways. I'm off up to the highlands of scotland in November and we are staying here www.burnbanklodges.co.uk We stayed here last year and have had family stay earlier this year, nice location for day trips out. some of the scenery around the highlands can challenge anywhere in europe. There are of course other lodges/hotels/accommodation around, but I can reccomend these :)

The other advantage of staying in the uk is that there are no language barriers, no issues with baggage handler strikes etc and no exchange rates to worry about. The downside is of course november weather  but at least thats predictable.

I went to Norway many years ago, beautiful place but very expensive even then. Have you thought of Germany as a destination?

I'd be looking at eastern europe or maybe north africa - Morocco?

thanks for all suggestions. i decided on granada in spain. i picked up tickets with ryanair for £115 2 people return, and hotels should be an extra 100 for 3 nights. i hear that its a beautiful place to photograph.

Have fun in Portugal then m8 :D

You mean spain?
