Hi all,

First of all sorry if this is in the wrong place, I'm new to the forums and couldn't see where else to post this!

I've got a pretty basic question yet I can't find an answer anywhere, so I was hoping you could shed some light on it? I'm starting out in photography and looking at sharing images on sites such as Flickr and 500px, and was thinking about putting something across the bottom of the photo referencing copyright e.g. '© 2014 MyName', but I don't know what rules on doing this are regarding fonts? If I use a font, does that mean that the copyright is invalidated because the image contains text in a font that isn't mine?

Thanks for any answers!

Hi Adam your watermark can be in any (legible) font of your choosing.

Fonts aren't free (well not all of them anyway). Just like photos, you can't simply nick one off the net and use it. All of the native fonts in your various software will come with a licence.

To clarify this for Adam, the fonts that come with his software, as in word processors or editing programs are licenced for him to use freely.

Thanks for this guys, already loving this community! Just while I'm asking about this though for future reference, if I use a font from somewhere, say Photoshop, and include it in a design or photo, can I distribute that image or 'product' commercially if it includes the text in that font?

You've got it Adam, you can use included fonts for your copyright notice for commercial use.

Awesome, thanks for explaining this and giving me a good introduction to the community! Can't wait to get going with more photography now :)

 PMSL

(I don't know what it is that you imagine goes on in the TP staffroom o_O . . . but honestly, it's not that <shudder!> )
Don't disillusion him Sarah, he has to have his enjoyment even if its only in his imagination

Just a note to say:
1. You don't need to out anything on at all. Copyright is yours whether or not you put it on there. All the copyright marker does is put others on notice that the material is copyright and not free to use
2. Always keep a copy of the picture without the copyright - just in case you want to use it for a calendar or set of cards or something.
All the fonts available to you in any the application that lets you apply tem will be fine to use - so if you use photoshop, any font they supply is fine to use. Just be sure it's readable when applied to the background (I managed to put black text on black once)
