I brought a 70-300 this week which is perfect for travel due to its size and lack of weight. Whilst I was out, i really wished that i had more reach - the f6.3 didn't both me too much as the d500 stands up pretty well to high ISO.

So i started to look at super-teles...i think the Sigma 150-600 sport will be too heavy and the Nikon 200-500 too long at the wide end. So that leaves the Sigma 150-600C and the Tamron 150-600 g2.

There doesn't look to be a lot of difference in them but wondered what people thought ? I'm a bit of a pixel peeper for my sins so wondered if one was significantly better ?

I have the Tamron version and it's a cracking lens- be it a little heavy- but, thats what mono pods are for

Les

Is that the g2 version Les or the older version ?

Thanks - they seem reasonably priced too now

The Sigma is simply a fantastic lens, sharp throughout all the range, fast focussing, not a lightweight, but not heavy either, solid build and can be customised using the dock...........no brainer really

Yep, when I get my D500 I'm putting one of these on it.
Had this setup before, plenty good enough for my needs.

Is that the contemporary one Trevor ?

Just bought the Sigma C version. Cracking lens, took it out for a walk earlier round the woods. Its heavy, but not overly so. Ended up getting this shot whilst sat in my dining room. Haven't used the Dock yet either, so it may get even better.

Well that’s a great start - happy with it ?

Yep, very much. Forgot to say, thats at 1/60th second at 600mm handheld.. So much for the focal length/shutter speed "rule"

Its pretty handy for moon shots too, still have to crop the hell out of it, but not as much as my 70-200!

If you are wanting one like new, have a look in classifieds ;)

I saw that but it’s a bit close to the new price of £699 for me, sorry. Also pay day isn’t for a few weeks :(

Just seen they have come down a bit, reduced mine now, but boy the Amazon deal is cheap :(

@damianmkv Just another couple to help you make a decision. :D

First is a 100% crop at 550mm handheld f/6.3 ISO 1600 1/500 (I was so busy trying to track the blighter I didn't realise Id zoomed out a bit from 600mm)

Am I right in thinking that, with the SIgma, the C & S are the same parts in a different body?

I have an S, and is damned heavy. So much so I've moved all of my wildlife stuff over to my X-T2, 100-400 & 1.4TC

I believe the optics are more or less the same although the S has an additional FLD element, the S is weather sealed, the C isn't. They also site better build quality, but the C seems pretty well made to me.

From my brief usage, I can't see how the C could be much improved, certainly the weather sealing isn't worth an extra grand or whatever the difference is. The C is super sharp, as demonstrated, and the AF is fast enough for most applications.
Some people even think the C is sharper overall, I guess it depends on product variation.

Having had both (twice just to rule out sample variation) I settled on the S version. I do think the S is a tiny bit sharper but the C makes up for that in portability. Me, I prefer the tiny bit sharper and arm ache (especially when doing an air show for 5/6 hours)

No I know, I only bought mine last week. I thought of it as an investment as I’m planning on selling some images on Xmas cards and postcards next year, that and I’d rather spend money on myself than other people.
