After some advice for father in law, he's after a telephoto lens around 500 / 600mm for Sony body.

He has the Sony 70-300 G lens and is very happy with it, but is finding it a bit on short side on occasions and he's been thinking a getting a longer lens - up to 500 / 600mm.

Think he's looking at Sigma / Tamron lenses - anyone experience of / used any ?

Cheers

The Minolta/Sony 500m f8 AF reflex, now only available second hand, is a usefully cheap small and light 500mm lens. Not as good as the much bigger, faster, and much more expensive refractors of similar focal length, but because it's so much smaller and lighter, much more likely to be in your camera bag just in case. It's one of my favourite lenses.

Out of interest, I have just purchasedthe Tamron SP 150-600mm f5.6-6.3 Di VC USD G2 for use with a Canon EOS5DIII. Never tried to handle anything of quite this size before, but have not found it to be unmanageable, even without a tripod/monopod. Its is producing some pretty decent resuts, though I have only been out with it about 4 times. Like all lenses of this type it is really ideally suited to situations where the light is very good, as the best results seem to be obtained between f8 - f11, so testing it in the UK during February is not likely to produce the best results!

If you would ike to see some examples of the performance of the lens please see:
