No doubt this has been asked many times before but, as i'm a newbe, i would appreciate some advice on shooting into the sun. My initial efforts resulted in the area around the sun being completely blown.
 
You'll need to set your exposure for the sun, or just around the sun. Try using the spot meter to give you an idea of the suns exposure rating, fix that and work back from that exposure using your viewing screen (highlight screen too maybe) ... let more light in by gradually increasing the exposure until the darker areas of the sky are lit as you want.

You can also take two or three separate exposures... exposed for different parts of the image and merge them later ...although that takes some knowledge of Photoshop etc.
