PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!! I live on a lovley island and one thing we pride ourselves on is having lovley sunsets. I went out this evening with my camera to get some shots. . . . . they were awful!
I tried every setting possible on my 400d but no joy! I am still quite new to photography and litterally just have my camera and thats it.
PLEASE PLEASE help me.:help:

whats wrong with them can you post an example as it will help.

eeeek no way, they are awful. Far to dark although the weather was bright and lovley!

If your camera is on an auto setting, it'll be trying to expose for the sun

The sun is quite a bright thing, even when it's setting

Hence while the camera tries to get the sun right (it won't, but it's trying) everything else (which is much darker than the sun) is underexposed and hence too dark

Our eyes are amazing as they can cope with this massive light/dark difference (called the Dynamic Range) much much better than a camera can

The short answer is, if you put it on manual and keep altering either the aperture OR the shutter speed (not both) you will get some shots 'right' for the sun and some 'right' the for rest

The sun ones will be very dark, the rest will be lovely seas and white suns

Sad news is - you can't have both usually

I know the internet is a fab tool - but as a newbie to photography you still can't beat a basic 'How to' book IMO; so nip down to the library and get everything out - then experiment - and slowly, annoying slowly perhaps, you'll start to capture those fab sunsets; even if it means buying some filters, or learning a few Photoshop techniques too

Don't get disheartened

Cheers

ha ha cheers guys! infact someone did do that no so long ago in the library not so long ago. . . anyway thats another story!

ok, have posted a couple on landscapes!

Also, dont be afraid to load the image into photoshop and adjust contrasts and saturation, have fun with it.

I think if you posted just one of the images up here you will get a wealth of feedback in return.

check them out on landscapes and scenary, please please comment
