Sully's Photo52 for 2011 - Week #5 Hard

Week 5 - Hard by Callum Sullivan, on Flickr

Ironically I found this weeks theme quite hard to do. Ended up going for something that was a hard challenge to do - learning an instrument.

This proved to be hard in more than one way though, the light was hard to work with, so I ended up pushing ISO2000, and the bass itself was hard to photograph (Bit of a dust magnet). In the end, I decided to add just one last element of hard and make it somewhat hard to figure out what the subject of the photo actually is through the editing and shallow DOF.

Not 100% on this one, so C&C largely welcome :)

Hiya Callum,

Firstly, just want to let you know that your title in the OP title states 'Week 4 - Hard', it should be Week 5 - Hard.

When I saw the image I immediately saw that it was an instrument. Nice DOF and like the way you have got the strings blurred with the focus on the fret board.

A lovely image, although a tad noisy, but that is probs due to the high ISO you used.

I can see what you mean about the base being a dust magnet, with is especially evident on the left.

I'm not sure about the white in the background and think it would have been interesting if you could have got this shot with a darker background.

Overall a nice take on the theme.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Hey Dawn,

Whoops, thanks for pointing that out, all fixed now :) lol.

Yeah I think it was the ISO, do you think it would work better with noise reduction applied?

I shot it on my bed, so may try again (also with better light) on top of the bed covers as apposed to on the white sheets.

Thanks for the kind words :).

Hiya Callum,

You are welcome :)

I'm not sure if the noise reduction would work, as it will probs make it too soft

I think your best bet, considering you wanting to alter the background, is to do a reshoot some time, but not use such high ISO, rather try reducing the ISO and adjust the fx and perhaps use some alternate lighting. Good luck.

Not sure if this helps much, maybe someone else has other advice.

Cheers

Dawn :)

I thought it was a model railway track at first... Im not sure about it... looked at it a few times... I think I like it... but im not sure id like it long term if you get me... i.e if I printed it and stuck it on a wall after a while I think i'd think why... due to its abstract nature... I just dont know...

On the other side I love the grainy effect... i've been trying to do that with some B and W stuff but I just dont get the look... reminds me of old b and W film stuff I used to shoot!
