Yes
Our mini HiFi system is starting to play up and I feel a replacement is imminent. So what are our options bearing in mind that we currently have a fair size CD collection.
Don't want anything too large but willing to consider joining the 21st century !!!

I recently got a Demon DM39 for the bedroom, hooked up some mid 90s Mission speakers, 2 weeks later moved into the living room.. I am proper amazed how good it is..

Can be had for a bargain from HyperFi eBay shop. Well worth considering, if you are near leicester more than welcome to drop in for a cuppa and a listen.

I have the Denon DM38DAB, earlier model of ^ DM39 plus DAB radio. Richersounds have the DM39 at £160 minus the speakers. If you match it with some good speakers the sound is hard to beat.

/edit just spotted the DM39 has DAB too, makes the price even better.

yeah sorry, I automatically assume everything is DAB nowadays.. I paid £142 for mine from HyperFI eBay but I see they have none in stock at the mo.

What's a CD?:p
What about something that you can store your cd collection on?

Or something that can stream from your PC?

Or both?

That Denon should be excellent with the right speakers. iPod and dock for those who don't care about music. ;)

Thanks for that. I'll look into the Denon and Marantz. Any suggestions for small speakers to match with this please

I thought the 21st century way is to copy the CDs onto a PC. And play all your music from hard disk or streaming through a suitably connected amp. And if you have a home or wifi network you can play any track, anywhere. Any investment should be forward looking like Bobsyeruncle linked to, rather than already out of date technology

Denon branded speakers are Mission, so Mission would be a great choice... I currently cannot decided between my Mission 731's or Tannoy 601s so I keep alternating and TBH they both sound awesome...

the Q acoustic 2010/2020s get very well reviewed but I would recommed going back a decade or 2, Mission 731/751/MX1 etc... all superb and can be had for bargains but factor cost of stands into that.

looks like you thought wrong.. ne'er mind there is always tomorrow.

What about the new multi room WiFi systems. You send your music via WiFi to the speaker(s) from your tablet our phone. You can play streaming music or online radio. I think you can play all your stuff from say iTunes cloud to it. Now that is the future.

Example: http://www.panasonic.com/uk/consumer/home-entertainment/wireless-speaker-systems/sc-all8.html

The Sonos 5 system has also been recommended to me so will check that out as well. Thanks for all the pointers - much appreciated

Yeh I saw it in currys, its pretty awesome. I have a home theatre system which has an ipod dock with a classic in it, but you have to turn the tele on the use it and it takes ages for the menus to load. Panasonic do a box which you plug into a HiFi etc enabling it to received music from your tablet or mobile so thinking of getting that and plugging it into the theater. Meaning i get ace quality and volume with ease of use. But its £200.

I gave up on cds and started streaming from a NAS to pc/ps3/smart tv, my music collection is over 250gb.. I had 2 160gb iPods.

then last year I realised I hadn't properly listened to music for ages, it was always in the background on shuffle and playlists etc... so I stripped it all back and went to cds and for me it was one of the best things, I now find time to sit down and listen to an album.. and cds are so cheap now, I have picked up 600 odd cds in the past year and at least half of them were only a quid each..

so yes cds are now dated but for me it suits.. and I will say that even though my cds are ripped at a respectable 320kpbs and played through a good quality DAC to hifi it doesn't even come close to a cd, but that is a different debate.

I must pick up another turntable some time, but that's a different debate too. ;)

I still like to buy the CD because of the little book. I can't see why when you DL an album you cant DL the little book as a PDF.

Have you actually listened to a B&W Zeppelin

I agree it won't sound as good as £1500 worth of hifi but to say anyone who owns an ipod dock doesn't care about music is just crass

My Zeppelin sounds excellent.

I do also own a 1980s B&O system that cost a stupid amount of money when new that I bought from a very posh family at a boot sale for £50, they even threw in some LPs because nobody listens to those anymore

I'll offer up my opinion...

I own two hifi setups - one worth around £1500 and the other worth around £500. The only reason I'm telling you this is because in 90% of the time they are indistinguishable. I reckon if you shopped around you could get a killer system for next to nothing.

Basics are a simple 2 channel amp (stay away from surround sound amps - unless you have a need for one of course). Cambridge audio, Nad and Denon are all good bets and all sell solid budget ranges. Personally I like Nads (I know...silly name) but they are typically low on looks but high in sound.

Old Mission speakers are good. New ones not so good. In recent years they have been reviewed badly. If I was to offer a budget speaker I'd personally go for Tannoys or Q Acoustics.

CD player - like amps Nad, Cambridge Audio etc are all fine.

You could always forgo the CD player and buy a music streamer (I have one, it's great).

All that said.....depending on your budget there are stacks of bargains out there, Richer Sounds and various other online retailers sell package deals. Typically these are mostly Amps and speaker setups.

Also. Don't forget Gumtree. Picked up some lovely stuff locally for next to nothing In the past (rega turntable for £75, and a CambridgeAudio CD player for £25)

Ps....BOSE (Buy Other Sound Equipment). As it happens I don't have much of a problem with Bose, but they are famous for not allowing their kit to be reviewed. On occasion though someone does purchase some of their kit for the purpose of seeing what the big deal is.... Rather predictably they often get okay reviews but more often than not the reviewer notes the overall quality of the components/and sound is much lower than what the cost of the item would have you believe....just a word of warning.
