Hello All, Im looking for suggestions for a reasonably priced, reliable and idiot proof flash meter. Its a minefield on Amazon, just looking for some pointers please
Cheers
Alan

If you're happy to go 2nd hand there are some bargains to be had. But not from Sekonic.

I'd recommend either Polaris or Minolta digital flash meters, they're more or less the same as a 308S but tend to be half the price if you hunt around.

Saying that I just got a couple of Laptronics digital flash meters, they were made a month before I was born but still work. I'm assuming they weren't cheap new but I'm surprised no one bought/reused the design as despite the lack of bells and whistles they seem nice.

More than happy to go 2nd hand Phil but Iv a very limited knowledge of flash and none of flash meters, is there anything in particular I should look out for or avoid?
Thanks mate

Cheers Simon, Iv been watching Mike Browne on Youtube all afternoon and cant wait to get started!

Mines a Minolta Autometer IIIf which was about £25 after some careful eBay searching.

I have had all brands of meter, Gossen, Kenko & Minolta, Polaris, Sekonic and keep coming back to the L308 series, they are by far the easiest to get your head around, very accurate and you can drop on them for handy money, my last 308B was £55.

Thanks mate. Iv been a Gavin Hoey groupie all morning, loads of helpful stuff and he seems to be exclusively using a sekonic 308, it looks so easy!!...or does he just make it seem that way?

Thats not meant as a downside - Its a good meter & retains excellent 2nd hand value - there are lots of meters out there just as good but just not used as much...
I dont know about them as I had the 308s & only recently got the 758...

Thanks Pete, Im all you tubed out now! Iv been caning the tutorials for the last few days and Im ready to take the plunge..Ebay and Amazon will be seeing a lot of me this weekend!

The old portaflash jobs are dead cheap and easy to use: http://goo.gl/VV7iGP
The best combination of functionality and price is to be found in the Sekonic L558 - ambient and flash, incident and reflective 1 degree spot meter.
There could be a portaflash meter up for sale here soon ;)
