Had my Canon 450D for a couple of years now and think it's time for a bit of an upgrade. Main reason for the upgrade is for better performance under low light conditions.

Current lenses are:
  • Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
  • Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM

Would be nice if I can keep these but if not can always sell them on.

Not been keeping up with things so lost touch on whats out. Sticking with Canon, what would be a good upgrade? Budget wise ~£500 (plus whatever the 450D is worth) for the body.

I'd be looking at a 700D. Falls into your price bracket perfectly and would be a nice step up from your current camera.

Was just reading about the 100D, crazy how small they have got it, and they were saying you're as well paying the bit extra for the 700D. Could be a toss up between them, will need to see if I can find anywhere with them in stock so I can play around with them.

Can I ask what is wrong with the performance of your 450d in low light that would be solved by a 700d?

Could you simply use a decent flashgun? or Tripod? Obviously that is not going to work everywhere, but can solve many problems, and better than a very slightly improved new body or you need to look at full frames for significant gains.

Already have a Canon Speedlite 430EX II and tripod but I prefer to shoot handheld with natural light. Was hoping advances in technology have reduced the amount of noise you get shooting at higher ISO hence reason for an upgrade.

Plus upgrading now means I can recoup some money by selling my 450D whilst it's still worth something.

I have the 450D and 600D, and whilst you can see an improvement in noise at high ISO, for the cost of it, I think you would be disappointed in the improvement. I compared the different bodies as an upgrade to the 450D, but went for the 600D because I was primarily looking at having video capability, and I didn't have a great budget, so that was by far the cheapest as I bought it imported.
Imo the only real significant difference and best cost-wise (instead of having to upgrade twice) would be if you saved a little more, and got a secondhand 5DII. The fortunate thing is that you only have one EF-S lens.

Think I have talked myself into the 100D, hoping to go the the shops and check it out at the weekend.

Would be more inclinded to take it out more due to the size and weight so this may sway me. Need to see what it's like with my 50mm on it.

I will be going down the 70D route as an upgrade from my 450D when I've saved up! Guess that is a bit out of your budget though. I will keep my 450D for use as a second body, plus as a training tool for my sons to learn with.

I'm looking for increased ISO range improved FPS and RAW buffer as 6 insn't enough when shooting aircraft / motorsport. Wireless speedlight transmitter will be useful.
