Hi all, one of the main things I struggle with mostly is finding new locations so was hoping to pick your brains as to how you guys go about finding new subjects and locations (apart from driving about aimlessly, which is kinda my speciality). So any info and tips you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

A couple of suggestions -

Have a look at an OS map of an area(either the paper version or online, via Bing Maps). They have stacks of detail that can help find a possible good locations.

Have a look at this site - http://www.geograph.org.uk/

It is trying to get photos for every grid square. Sometimes the photos aren't great but the coverage is good and you can get an idea of what is in a particular area.

This - http://photoephemeris.com/ is very useful for sunrise and sunset shots. It is free for PCs and Macs.

Thanks Dave, I'll have a look at that site. Already have photoephemeris .

What exactly are you interested in taking pictures of? I'm presuming landscapes, but can you clarify? Flickr is a good place to do a search for things, as is a google image search for the area that you are in.

It is landscapes but also urban architecture type shots.

Explore, keep you're eyes open every day, read maps, search Flickr.

The problem isn't finding locations, it's having your eyes tuned to the world around you and seeing the image. Everywhere is a location.

For 'scapes it is Flickr (including some local groups) and travel sites magazines.
For birds it is local parks and usually where there is water
For motor sport it is regional racetracks etc.
For opera and classical music concetrs it is wherever my wife is singing.

As Alastair says locations are everywhere - just go for a walk.

Stop driving around, get out of the car! Very few breathtaking landscape shots will be spotted while driving go explore!

I must be doing something wrong, one of my problems is that I keep seeing the shot when I can't stop or it isn't safe to stop whilst driving.. ..

I drive a lot through my work, I keep the satnav running and if I see a potential location store it as a favourite with a short description, all starting with photo so I can scroll through them, eg Photo Glen Etive Rapids. I can then go back when the light is how I need it for the shot I have in mind.

Once I've got a location in mind I research it using flickr, The Photographer's Ephemeris, tide times (if applicable), weather forecasts etc. OS maps are useful so I have ones for my usual haunts, North York Moors, Glencoe, Skye etc.

Excellent idea with sat nav mark. Thanks
