Can anyone recommend a decent flash gun that can be bought for less than £100, I've only really seen the Jessops home brand one, and wondered if it was any good.

In a recent issue of DSLR user magazine there where reviews on about five flashes around the £100 price range. I can't remember the exact model but I can remember the makes;

Jessops 360af

sunpak

nissin

yongnuo

i can't remember if there was a fifth one or not but hope this helps.

I have one of the 'yongnuo' flashes for my Canon 40D and I cant rate it high enough. for less than £50 its easy to use and also can be used to set of studio lights. I have had no problems with mine.
Fantastic value.

Yongnuo YN560 if you can find one. Failing that YN460-II.

I would recommend getting a YongNuo YN-560

It is more powerful than the YN-460II and recycles quicker, it also has a zoom function in the head and has a better optical slave and pc sync socket.

I got mine from Ebay (£58 inc delivery from HK)... not sure if FITP has them in yet!

Cant recommend it highly enough!!!!

another vote for yongnuo . I always recommend them as I think that they are doing a cracking job. the built quality of the flashes are really, really good :)

Got a couple of the Jessops, work fine. About 3 years old now.

Do you want it for on camera stuff or strobist?

If on camera then there's nowt better than the Nissin Di-622.

A recently linked review put the 560 at less power!

Would you care to currently link it? :)

i was looking for a cheapish flash too.. for the GF1.

I ended up with choosing either a manual one or ttl ONLY one.

cant decide which would be best. Id probably only use it for fill in, and I tried my 580EXII on manual and it overexposed and i had to fiddle with the manual settings to get it right. I cant say Id like to have to do this on every shot as soon as the light changed a tad. i suppose Id probably be best with a ttl would I?

Sorry, all I see there is the 560 outperforming the 460-II by about a stop. :)

Remember, on the YN460-II, Full Power and Half Power are EXACTLY the same. So the YN560 is a stop over the power of the YN460-II.

YN460-II range f/4-f/22
YN460 range with head zoomed to 35mm f/2.8-f/32

The science is that it's just not as powerful as they claimed :P

SB-400 isn't that much better than the popup.

In the blog there was a bar chart and some discussion on the fact surrounding it.. I stand corrected..

Yeah, basically people just took the documentation's word for it that 1/2 power was half as much light as full power. And it wasn't, it was the same (give or take a few tenths of a stop).

As above ive got a yongnuo from flash in the pan on this site, for £50 delivered i struggle to see how a 200 + flash would be better

£200 flash would probably be ETTL as well as manual perhaps?

or have high speed sync. the last alone is super important for me if I shoot portraits outdoors.

Yup, this is a biggy for me too. After some recent experimentation with the AutoFP high speed sync, it's something I plan on using a lot more and I'll be picking up a few more SB-900s over the coming months.

But, I'll be getting some YN560s to tide me over for some repeat flash and other stuff in the meantime. :)

The YN465 is basically a YN460 with TTL. And the TTL only works on the hot shoe (or via a TTL cable on the hotshoe).

So you can't setup a bunch of flashes wirelessly and have them all shoot TTL, or mix TTL and manual power flashes.

but for £50 delivered ? i still call bargain

If you've gotta get a YN flash then it's a straight fight between the YN-560 and YN-460-II.
