Yes
if I put a gel on my flash and fire it into a white umbrella would it do anything?

sorry for the stupid question, dont be harsh.

Hmmmmm, well at the risk of sounding very silly.......

The umbrella appears white because it reflects all frequencies of visible light. The gel blocks all bar a small proportion of the visible spectrum, and allows that colour through. If light of only one colour passes through the gel, then only that colour light will be reflected by the umbrella, unless there is also ambient light present. So I'd have thought it would do a nice, soft, coloured flash-type thingy?! But I'm really not sure! And seeing as I have neither a flash, umbrella, or gels, I'm unlikely to be able to say anything for sure, but that's what I'd guess I suppose! What do you reckon?

Yes it does. I've tried this with mixed results.

I think the white umbrella would transmit the colour of the gel but it would wash the colour out somewhat.
