Stupid question about storing equipment

I bought my first dslr with a few lenses before christmas. Due to one reason or another i haven't had any time to use it yet at all. I'm wondering if there is a better way to store cameras when not in use. My camera has the kit lens attached and is stored in a lowepro bag, lens down. I just realised this might not be best for the camera or lens? Is it better to leave the lens attached when not being used or take it off and put all caps on lens and body?

I wouldn't worry youself too much......In the camera bag, it's away from dust etc and protected to a degree from being knocked about.
I would just suggest that you ensure it isn't stored anywhere humid but even then so long as it's not stored like that for a long period then all should be ok.

Seriously, cameras are reasonably robust; they are designed to be used, unless you are storing them in extreme cold, heat or humidity you will not have any problems.

As said, keep away from extreme variations in heat.

Perhaps chuck in a couple of silica gel packs into the bag.

If my camera is going to go unused for a while, I prefer to store it with no lens attached, with the body cap. Same with my lenses, just in their separate pouches with caps attached.

Why bother?

The killer is moisture, ie in a loft over winter. Long term, take the batteries out.

Silica gel only works if inside a sealed poly bag, and the gel is dry to start with - which it won't be unless it's been dried first, eg airing cupboard.

It's just personal preference, having everything lined up on the corner of a desk ready for when I next take the camera out. That way I can just select the lens I want, attach it and place it into my bag along with any other lenses / bits and bobs that I'll require.

It goes hand in hand with my dislike for taking out more gear than I need, I very rarely carry much gear with me.

Mine live in two big plastic tubs lined with a little bit of padding that used to be wrapped around some prints. Purely for tidying the place up, before that they were just sat on my desk or in a bag.

I leave lenses on, which ever was on when I stopped shooting last. My 24-70 pretty much lives on my 5D so no point taking it on and off and getting more dust on the sensor.

Hi

Generally my camera is in my bag with a lens attached, other lens in the bag as well, I also have a plastic lidded container, which I can keep stuff in.

Just make sure it's in a safe environment, so is protected from knocks etc...

It's worth keeping it in the least dusty place you can find as it will get in every nook an cranny of the bag if kept somewhere like a bedroom.
Any sort of dampness won't be good long term.

When I had to store the kit away in a possible damp place, I got a couple of those vacuum bags, the ones you suck the air out of, placed a few gels bags , sucked out a bit of air and sealed them. If you suck out the air, you can see at a glance if the bags are leaking and letting air back in.

worked for me.
