Stunning bokeh tutorial

I'd love a 1.2 lol
All down to money but yes it would look great

nice image, nice simple blog post to understand too.
tried this over xmas period with various nik-naks and came out quite well, never thought of setting for portraits tho!

Like all pre 1997 photographers I managed to control the extent and quality of the out of focus areas in my shots perfectly well without the re-coining of the Japanese word Boke in to the fashionable Boke.
It simple means out of focus, and is used to describe the "Quality" of the out of focus regions of an image. More recently it has also become used used to describe the "Quantity" of the out of focusness.
All images can contain out of focus areas beyond their depth of field. Their Quality is governed by both the Aberrations present (mostly spherical aberration) and the shape of the lens aperture. The Amount simply depends on how out of focus the areas are.

Prior to 1997 words such as Differential focus and quality of image blur described the same phenomena rather more accurately in English.

Have a look here for some examples...http://www.patb-photography.co.uk/3255/differential-focus/

Nice picture and great info on how you achieved it.

Terry, you coiuld say something nice about the post. If you've got a bee in your bonnet about bokeh then you'll be a busy bee repeating your lecture all over the internet.

BTW I'm not even 50 but had my first SLR in 1981 and got the gist of DoF which is what most people seemed to refer to it as. Thanks for the technical info though.

The picture was good when he put it up last time, and he has won with it at club level.
This time it was a "how to blog"
My first SLR was a Thornton Picard ruby reflex in about 1948, it had marvellous selective focus, and beautiful Boke.

Nice how-to for those not in the know, although it might be worth mentioning that the out of focus quality (bokeh, boke or whatever floats your boat) is also dependent on the individual lens. The cheap "nifty fifty's" give acceptable results but tend not to be round and have a halo, the large aperture Sigmas, Samyangs amongst others are renowned for theirs, and some others including the Helios 44-2 gives OOF highlights that can make you feel sick.

Kudos for taking the time to explain your methods though, i'm sure a lot of members will benefit from it.
